Today we’d like to introduce you to Clint De Lacy.
Clint, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started tattooing in 2000, apprenticing under Kelly Miller at Susie M’s . I lasted there about a year and went over to ASI working for Don and Sharon Brouse. Around 2007 I left ASI and with a couple of friends started Edison Street Tattoo. After a few years, we all felt pulled in different directions. I went down to Samoa Ink and then AWOL tattoo. During this time I was traveling back to New Zealand and Australia fairly regularly to visit family and do some work.. After one of these trips, the owner of AWOL , Marcus, decided to the same thing back to Germany where he was from. When he got back he closed shop and went back to Germany for good. That is when I opened This is the Place Tattoo. I was in Midvale for about 8 years until the building was sold and now I’ve been downtown for last 5 years
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Tattooing had always been feast or famine . It can be overwhelming when you’re too busy to take a break, and even more stressful when you’re slow. The uncertainty can be stressful . But nothing is guaranteed and whether you’re tattooing or doing something else, there’s going to be bumps in the road on occasion . I don’t think I’ve had any more struggles than anyone else. Fortunately, my backup plan of playing music pays even less than a struggling tattooer , so when things get slow I just have to keep going. I like to paint too. When things get slow tattooing, I paint more. I don’t really feel like I’m struggling when I’m painting.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have many interests and styles that I like. A lot of people specialize in one thing or another these days and that is great. There are some mind blowing artists doing some mind blowing things. As long as things flow well with a body, I really don’t care what style it is.
Personally, I like having the opportunity to do many different things depending on what someone wants. You could say that my specialty is whatever it is we’re working on when you ask me that question. I like to think that my body of work is what sets me apart from all the other amazing artists out there but I just took a quick scroll on instagram. I’m gonna say my sparkling personality is what sets me apart. Unless you catch me on a bad day, then maybe my playlist at the shop is what you’ll remember, it has some banger tunes on there. Unless music is not your thing, then I guess you can say I have very convenient parking and / or easy access to trax. Not everyone has that.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’m very easy to get a hold of and am always interested in meeting cool artists that may want to work or collaborate together . I’m also always accepting new wealthy patrons who want to give me money to be their art monkey, or whatever. I’m open to negotiating something
