Today we’d like to introduce you to Stuart Sondrup.
Hi Stuart, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
PerformanceWest Physical Therapy was started by Kim Reid and Curtis Jolley in 1998 when they joined their practices. Their First location was in Bountiful close to Lakeview hospital.
That is when I first met them. I was in high school and had an injury that required physical therapy. I found my way to them and fell in love with the profession.
I grew up in Bountiful, in a single parent home and worked very hard to pay my way through school and eventually get accepted to the University of Utah’s doctorate program in Physical Therapy. I had tried to keep in touch with Kim and Curtis over the years and when I graduated, in 2011, they were kind enough to offer me a position. In 2019 I became a partner in the practice.
PerformanceWest has grown substantially over the years. We now have six clinics across Davis County and 10 therapists. We offer a wide variety of care from general orthopedic care to vestibular rehab and women’s health.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road is never smooth. There have been many challenges along the way for PWPT. The most memorable in recent memory was COVID. COVID was obviously a struggle for many companies and we were no different.
I had just taken out a large business loan to buy-in to the company and five months later the world shut down. We were considered essential so we remained open but we were seeing almost zero patients. The three of us owners met many times to discuss how to keep all of our employees coming and keep paying them. We determined that the only way to do it would be to not pay ourselves until we could generate enough to do so. This was a very stressful time for all of us but I was suddenly trying to figure out how to pay for this loan I had and had many sleepless nights along the way.
Ultimately, it all worked out. We were able to keep all of our employees and since that time we have flourished.
As you know, we’re big fans of PerformanceWest Physcial Therapy . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
PerformanceWest has always prided itself on offering skilled care in the most professional and friendly way possible. We always look for hard working, intelligent, and personable therapist who are committed to their craft and to helping others. Because of this, we believe we have a team of professionals who are second to none. Our support staff is phenomenal as well.
Our primary objective is to help people get better and regain their quality of life. With that being said, the thing we are most proud of are the thousands of patients who have put their trust in us over the years and have had such a good experience that they tell their family and friends about it.
We offer a variety of services from orthopedics, vestibular and balance, and women’s health.
We encourage anybody who might be in need of PT to come to one of our clinics and chat with a therapist and see if we are the right place for you. We are confident you wont be disappointed.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe my partners and I would all agree that we believe in calculated risk. You don’t grow a business in a competitive market without taking some risks. The key is to understand as many variables as possible beforehand, try to make educated guesses on the unknowable variables, and make a decision. The idea is to go into every decision with your eyes wide open to the risks and the potential rewards.
My partner, Kim Reid, always says “make a decision and then make it the right decision. Don’t look back, only look forward and work your butt off to make the decision the right one.”
