Today, we’d like to introduce you to Mary Horne Nelson.
Hi Mary, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I’ve always been interested in business and creating! When I was young, I used to find any opportunities I could to create and sell something. From rubber band bracelets to trying to elevate the classic lemonade stand, I tried it all! I fell into photography almost by accident (or by perfect opportunity from God and the universe).
When I was in my early teens, one of my favorite hobbies was sewing at the time, and I wanted to sell the things I made online. I realized that to do that, I needed to take beautiful photos. I borrowed my dad’s camera, quickly fell in love with taking photos, and forgot about sewing completely. Through the years, I worked summer jobs to purchase my first camera. Without supportive neighbors who hired me to help run their businesses and nanny their kids, I wouldn’t be where I am today. My business slowly grew into something beautiful, fun, and amazing!
I made the difficult decision when I was 19 to leave my business for a year and a half to serve a mission for my church, and I was really afraid that all my hard work would be lost, but the opposite happened! When I returned home several years ago, I was able to rebuild and get such amazing opportunities. I now photograph families and brands from across the United States. It’s such an amazing blessing!
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think every business has its challenges, but they are always such a great opportunity to grow. I feel so fortunate that my path has felt so right.
But when challenges have come up, I let myself feel upset or sad, and then work to make sure that I can overcome the challenge, and use it to better my business. The best advice I would have for someone is to find a mentor who can help you when challenges arise.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a family + commercial photographer and photography + business educator located in Salt Lake City and Provo, Utah. I love that I get to photograph both families and businesses because it keeps my work interesting and different each day while still being able to establish myself in each niche.
I am known for playful, colorful, and fun family photos and clean + creative commercial work. I think specializing in both of these niches simultaneously sets me apart, as well as my use of bold colors. I feel that so much of the photography community uses muted tones, but I love to keep things punchy and true to life.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I’ve learned the importance of approaching my business with the client at the top of my mind.
While it’s important to create a sustainable and fulfilling business, the best way to get there is by serving the people who support you and deliver a beautiful product or service to them. Communicating clearly about what my clients can expect is crucial to me.
