Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael DeShazo.
Hi Michael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My wife and I had the idea to start a small distillery that focused on high-quality, small-batch, spirits about 12 years ago while traveling on vacation. We finally met Ethan Miller, our distiller, as he was leaving another distillery, and the idea began to take on a life of its own.
We were able to finally open our doors in May of 2019, and make a strong start, then COVID hit and we were one of many businesses that had to find creative ways to survive. We used that time to build our brand, and have been successful in getting our name out there. Now, we are back on track and our products are being used by bars and restaurants across the entire state.
Our commitment to only high-quality products has been the backbone of our success and has resulted in numerous awards for all of our products, most recently from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, where all of our products were awarded medals, including Double Gold, Gold, and Silver.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. COVID his us harder than most as we were new, with little brand recognition, when it hit, and our products are generally in a higher price tier than our local competition. We offset that with all Utah firsts, and word of mouth along with a strong social media presence has helped us survive.
Like all local small producers, the fate of the bar and restaurant industry is our fate as well, to a great degree. When they were closed that was a huge hit to our business. Now, however, we are all back and trying to fully recover.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
All of us have at least two jobs. I am an airline pilot and a distillery owner. On the distillery side, we are known for our quality and our branding. Our team consists of Ethan, the distiller, who handles most production and processing, Barbie, my wife, who is the brains behind our luxury branding and experience at the distillery, as well as our marketing and sales.
Her social media experts have been the reason we have survived. My role is more admin, but I also help with all aspects of the distillery, especially production and processing. We are very proud of the quality of our products. We put enormous effort into sourcing the best ingredients, ensuring our branding is on point and making certain that our customers have the best possible experience at our distillery.

Holystone has nothing to do with any religion, and isn’t a reference to the LDS church! We get asked that all the time. Also, I was a pilot in the Navy, Ethan used to be an MMA fighter, and Barbie loves to fly fish!!!
