Conversations with Averi Potter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Averi Potter.

Hi Averi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My name is Averi Potter, I am a 19-year-old Photographer in Salt Lake City, UT. In April, I started my business, Av Potter Photo, and have loved every minute of it since. I have done Photography since 7th grade, by taking pictures of flowers and my friends every once in a while. I really got into Photography when my grandpa started a Photography class at the now-closed Art Institute of Salt Lake City.

I helped him with his assignments sometimes and it really made me more interested in the art of Photography. After his class ended, I actually “borrowed” his camera, even though it took me about four years to give it back until I got my own camera. After experimenting with different photography styles, I learned that I liked taking pictures of people instead of nature. That’s how I ended up here where I am now.

I never intended to start my own Photography business. I think one day I just decided to start it up. I made my own website, offering a lot of free sessions and that’s why I am here now, taking pictures of people’s amazing weddings and other different photo sessions. I always still remember when I was in the car with my mom and I had seen a shooting star and I said to her, “Mom look, a shooting star! Now I will get what I wish for!”

And she replied back, “Remember wishing is only half of it, the other half is that you have to work for it.” And I think that has stuck with me ever since. I still wish for my dreams to come true, but I also work hard to guarantee that they do. I am very proud and grateful for where I am now in my life, and I cannot wait for my future and to take more beautiful photos.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting up my own business has been hard, especially because I am so young. If anything, I am still learning with my photography, I am still learning my own style, how to pose my clients, and how to make sure that there is enough lighting, it’s all a learning process that I think I will always go through.

I still get frustrated if some things are off with my images, things like, I should’ve moved left more so I could’ve gotten everyone in the picture or I should’ve gotten his reaction first instead of hers when walking down the aisle. But I have learned from those mistakes, and I have been very lucky to have the clients that I have had.

So, I think it will never be a smooth road, but that is how I will learn and grow my business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a photographer that specializes in portraits, weddings/events, creativity, and graduations. I am most proud of beginning my business at 18 and from having a major number of clients since April when I started.

What sets me apart from other photographers is that I am also a photo lover, I love having photos of my life so I can go through them and remember all the memories from that certain day, so when I retouch my client’s images, I think to myself if these were my pictures.

I would definitely want this picture even if it looks silly because I would want that special memory. I strive for more candid pictures than posed ones because I cannot get enough of big goofy smiles than a posed one.

What matters most to you?
That my client is happy. If my client isn’t happy, I am definitely not happy either. I want my clients to see their photos and be overjoyed with how beautiful that moment was to them and that they have a picture to commemorate that moment.

I want them to tell me how happy they are that they have these memories for life and that I helped them achieve that. It makes me feel so happy that I can make other people happy with just one image. It’s what makes my business my favorite achievement of all time.
