Conversations with Kyle Benjammin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Benjammin.

Kyle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My Name is Kyle Benjammin I was born May 6th, 1997, in Layton, Utah. I started writing raps when I was in 6th grade to fit in because I moved around a lot. By the time I was in junior high, I began recording with my homie Brett through his lakers headphones in the bathroom of his mom’s apartment.

Learning that recording through headphones was not going to work we invested into our own microphone and would stay up all hours of the night to attempt to record songs.

Soon after high school, I began doing local shows for a few years, networking and building relationships with other artists in Salt Lake City.

Until I was given the opportunity to start doing shows out of state.

My first out-of-state show I drove by myself in my beater car with no working heater in the dead of winter to Rock Springs Wyoming for Toy Drive Charity Event. I remember by the time the show ended it was midnight and I had a 3–4-hour drive home so I sat, on one hand, to keep it warm and then would switch off periodically hoping it would keep my hands warm enough to drive. All while having spotty phone service (Probably not my smartest moment hahaha)

After doing a few shows in Vegas and Wyoming, I was given the opportunity to tour with World Wide Chopper Twisted Insane where I met my Friend/Business Partner Jrod the Problem who then put me on to 2 of his national Tours.

Now on my 5th National Tour, I will be headlining my very first tour

“The Keep It a Benjammin Tour “starting September 13th, 2022, in Utah My Home-State, traveling the west coast to the Midwest and then ending in Denver Colorado!!!

Also, the video to my newest single, “Sirens,” recently just dropped so be sure to check it out on my YouTube channel!!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To quote a D12 song, “The rap game is the hardest 9-5 you’ll ever have.”

Aside from trying to find your lane and audience in a very saturated market.

The biggest struggle, especially with hip-hop, is it’s a very cutthroat industry.

I’ve had people who I thought were friends rip me off or backstab me to get ahead.

Been in situations where if we had stayed too long, we could have…we’ll say been at the wrong place at the wrong time.

On top of all that trying to stay sane while juggling work, family, and music. This music business is NOT for the Faint of heart!

But I love it, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an Independent Hip-Hop Artist, who specializes in witty wordplay, speed, and Story Telling.

What sets me apart from others is I am unapologetically myself 100% of the time. Which is why my Motto is “Keep It a Benjammin.”

In an era where everybody is trying to sound like each other, I pride myself on being me because nobody can be me better than myself!

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Learning to wear multiple hats. As an independent artists, most of us don’t have the luxury of a label to back us.

So that means you got to learn to record yourself, market yourself, put yourself on shows, Engineer yourself, and if your smart learn to produce your own music!

Not only am I a Hip-Hop Artist, but I’m a Videographer, Video Editor, Promoter, Tour Manager, Graphic Designer, Producer, Social Media Marketer, etc.

It takes money to play this game, so the more you can cut out the middle man the further you’ll go!

QUICK TIP- A major label works just like a Bank; they give you an advance (Loan) then you pay them back. When you pay them back, you gain credibility (Credit), and they give you a larger advance.

Your Bank can be your label if you use it correctly!

TIP 2 – Be Teachable! Every Skill you learn can be used to make money which in turn can fund your career so take the time to learn!

And Last but not least, if you can find yourself a reliable team utilizes that to your fullest because we’re only human and we can only do so much!
