Conversations with MaKynsie Sweat

Today we’d like to introduce you to MaKynsie Sweat.

Hi MaKynsie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always dreamed of owning a business of some sort. Many people told me that, “at my age” it was a little far-fetched, and to keep dreaming. My journey to business owner began at age 15 when I started modeling, and the rest kinda fell into place. I have always had a deep love and desire for all things fashion. When I was four years old, my mom took me to get new cowgirl boots. The store had the cutest brown boots with pink tops.

I had my heart set on them! They were soft leather with stitching detail and pale pink. I had to have them! We left the store and my mom wanted to shop around a little more. Well, the next day, I went to preschool and I told my preschool teacher about these boots, “We saw these pink boots, Miss Beth, they were freaking adorable, I want them!” What four-year-old cares about boots that much? Needless to say, we ended up getting the boots.

So yes, fashion runs deep in my soul! I love to find clothing that makes me feel confident and I love helping others feel confident as well. Modeling for boutiques was such a fun opportunity. Meeting new people, seeing the new styles and trends, what’s not so trendy, and helping out with local pop-up shops. I loved every second of it.

Fast forward, I was 17, busy working and with life in general & completing my homeschool education. I wasn’t modeling very often, but I had stayed in touch with the cute gal who owned Thread Attire Boutique. Through our connections, an opportunity of a lifetime came! Along with a pandemic, and the whirlwinds of that, one night I thought to myself, I should reach out to that gal and see if she’d be interested in possibly selling the boutique, or maybe she could use my help, as I sought to learn more about the whole boutique industry.

As weird as it sounded to me to just reach out at such a random time, the outcome was more than I could’ve imagined. My thoughts of, “Yeah you’re crazy MaKynsie, don’t text her” we’re all just drifting away as she replied that she was actually looking to sell it and she had other opportunities she was pursuing. One thing led to another and, at age 17, I bought the boutique that I had modeled for just a couple of years earlier. It was a literal dream!! It took me by surprise that I was given such an opportunity at such a perfect time.

How was this possible? 12-year-old me would’ve been screaming with joy. And 17-year-old me wanted to just bask in the goodness! I can’t even begin to explain how much it meant to me. I had worked so hard for this & wanted this so much.

As the famous quote says, “She believed she could, so she did”. Not knowing a lot about the business side of things, I took a leap of faith and attempted to leave (… most of) my worries behind me. I had saved money my whole life for an experience like this to work. My family & friends were and still are the best support system. I couldn’t do any of this without them.

The first year was filled with so many emotions and it felt like I was actually riding a roller coaster. I felt all the highs, all the lows, and all the in-betweens. Working several jobs, and running my online boutique out of a small room in our home, was a crazy ride. Right during a pandemic, people weren’t going out as much, things were still weird and unknown.

Due to the world in commotion, getting to events was a little difficult, but I managed to do as many as possible. I also started doing pop-up shops in our home. These were and are a huge success and I love getting to see all my friend’s, families’ faces (and even some people I don’t know), helping them find the perfect pieces to add to their closets!

Since that first year, I’ve attended several different events and I’ve had such great success. Many people have told me how much they love the items I have to offer. That kind of feedback makes my heart so happy! The whole reason I do what I do and love what I do is because of those who love, support and keep my business going.

I’ve been able to expand my business and be able to host more pop-up shops, attend shows, and live sales, & figure out all the little things that I was unsure about in the beginning. If there’s one piece of advice I could give you, it would be… make that jump, take that leap, it will all fall in place. Never stop believing in yourself and what you are capable of doing.

I am a country girl at heart and there’s simply no way of changing that. Through my boutique, I have set goals to be an inviting space for people to come together on social media and allow me the opportunity to be a light and friend on social media even amidst the haters. I love to cheer others on in all their endeavors! I’ve allowed my creativity to spark and let my boutique be a part of me. Showing exactly who I am and the lifestyle I live.

I have a darling graphic tee that I wear often that says, “Mud and mascara”. It explains me & my business. Life gets a little messy, but I’m here for all the glam side of things as well. If you ever see me, just know I can be dolled up or a complete-farm-hair-doesn’t-care kind of mess & I love it all! Making reality normal. Dress it up but also dress it down. Country way of life to the transition of ready for a night out.

It’s a transition I’ll forever love. Thread Attire Boutique has shown me the importance of knowing that we are all needed, each and every one of us. No matter the way of life, or style of clothing you’re into. Creating a space where women feel confident is my goal, and it’s my lifelong commitment.

There’s a lot that goes into owning a business that prior to this I didn’t even pay any attention to. Oh boy, was I in for a treat. From social media, posting new arrivals, purchasing from vendors, and juggling all the other side & full- time hustles that I enjoy, I was going through the motions of eating, working, sleeping, and repeating. I am in awe of all those who run a successful businesses and take care of their families as well.

Lately, I’ve been trying to take a step back from the hustle and bustle of other things and really see what I have. I’ve realized that I have a business that has the potential to continue to grow to heights I can’t even fathom. Growing my business, this space in my little corner of the world, to the best of my ability to fulfill my hopes and dreams of the business owner I’ve always felt I wanted and needed to be, is a dream come true!

Realizing that I have a valuable and inspiring story to share in hopes of inspiring and enlightening others through my own journey is the cherry on the top! There is no better time than now. Be uniquely you, and take that leap!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As each business goes through rocky sections along the way, the timing of when I bought my business was right in the thick of the pandemic. So many unknowns. It all changed so fast and adjusting to what was not normal but what we were going through at the time was a challenge for sure.

Through owning the boutique there were a lot of things thrown my way that wasn’t expected. Such as fabric shortages, increased shipping costs, online events (rather than our normal in-person events), and the increased pricing of the items we purchase from our vendors.

I learned to ride the waves and go with the flow as I came across those challenges and continue to do so. Adjusting the different aspects of my business to fit the challenges we are facing. It’s hard to wrap your head around the obstacles that take place and affect your business in such a way that you have to change the way you operate.

Changing the setup of my website, social media, and getting followers to interact with me as the new owner of Thread Attire Boutique, and gaining their trust to allow me to help them find the outfit they love. Revamping every aspect of the business as everyone was in a sense of nervousness at the time I took over and rebuilding confidence & connection.

These are some of the obstacles I’ve navigated.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
