Conversations with Shaylee Kay Hilsmann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaylee Kay Hilsmann.

Hi Shaylee, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Shaylee Kay Hilsmann. I am a photographer, military wife and mother to 3 handsome rambunctious little boys.

We have moved around in the military for the last 6 years and have loved getting to experience new places at every turn including living in Hawaii for a time.

I got into photography during a rough deployment at the start of Covid while my husband was away. I needed a creative outlet during that time I was at home with my two little boys and I had always loved taking pictures.

I worked for the next two years learning all about different cameras, lenses, and editing styles. It’s taken me a lot of practice juggling being a stay-at-home mom to three boys & learning how to run a successful photography business. The journey has been challenging but rewarding.

Anything worth having is worth fighting for. Including a happy family & the satisfaction of capturing beautiful moments through a camera. I’ve loved how it lets out my creativity along with adding in a wonderful social aspect. I adore all my clients!!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a stay-at-home mother, raising my little boys through homeschool, and finding time for photography have been challenging.

Especially during military deployments that have my husband away for extended periods of time leaving me solely in charge of our household. I’ve learned to have a schedule and try my hardest to stick to a structured day so that I have time to work as well as give all three of my boys the attention they need and deserve.

A working mother doesn’t get breaks and most of the time it is completely worth all the sacrifice of sleep, girls’ nights, or lazy days at home.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a photographer currently breaking into the style of the western community. I am a warm-style photographer who loves to capture that sunset glow in the background of family pictures.

I absolutely love capturing families, couples, & new or expecting mothers. A lot of my clients recently have their horses join our sessions allowing me to capture that special bond between horse and rider.

I’m currently based in California and Southern Utah creating a diverse portfolio between beach portraits and the beautiful scenery that Utah gives including its red cliffs.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in good luck or bad luck. I believe in opportunities you allow yourself to develop into something wonderful. I believe that we all have trials in our life that can be considered bad luck but that just gives fuel to the fire of a good life story & how to overcome hardship making the journey something you can really be proud of.

The year 2021 was quite a difficult year and really tested me showing me what I can accomplish through heartache. Whether it’s death, depression, money problems, or family struggles, all of that can be made into “good luck” by truly giving yourself the grace to work towards something you find value in

. Mine was starting my photography business and learning all I can to make myself a better photographer.
