Conversations with Zyan Chavez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zyan Chavez.

Hi Zyan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I was always artistically inclined. When I was younger, I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup, but I enjoyed it as an art medium, so I would practice in secret. Over six years, I continued to grow my knowledge of makeup techniques and trends.

When a platform called TikTok came out my friends encouraged me to post my videos there since I spent so much time creating these intricate looks. Over the two years of that, I was able to start working with brands as well as start my own lash business.

I then moved on to content creation for Instagram where I was able to expand my content creation and collaborations with a new platform. I find a lot of joy in helping people who are just beginning in the beauty industry because I was once there.

Now that I have the experience that I do, it’s more rewarding to be able to help others.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was definitely not a smooth road.

I encountered a lot of struggles with trying not to get discouraged by other people’s words. And anytime I did make it up I was always experimental, so I encountered a lot of failures.

Without failure, I know what not to do or how to go about it now. Had I not had the struggles I wouldn’t have valued what I do as much as I do now.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I like to do out-of-the-ordinary makeup looks. I specialize in graphic liner, lyric makeup, special effects, full-face make-up routine, and skin care.

I am most proud of a technique that I came up with one day for TikTok, I didn’t want to wash my brushes so I just crumbled up a piece of tissue paper and put it in my eyeshadow and created a rainbow look.

That trend ended up getting 6.5 million views and a bunch of bigger makeup artists ended up doing it- of course not crediting me, but I still felt good knowing that I know where that idea originated from.

What matters most to you?
What matters to me most is making sure that people feel their most authentic selves, and I feel with doing make-up and being knowledgeable about skincare I’m able to help people start on the outside so they can begin to work on the inside.
