Daily Inspiration: Meet Breanna Halverson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Breanna Halverson.

Hi Breanna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello, my name is Breanna Panter Halverson! I am a baccalaureate registered nurse, farm momma of three, and wholesome food, family, fitness, and farm blogger. I was born, raised, and am currently residing in Northern Utah. I am grateful to share the life experiences that have brought me to where I am today as the blogger of BRE HEALTHY.

Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a momma and a registered nurse. I admired the competence, confidence, and caring attitude of my mother and grandmother who are both registered nurses. I chose to follow in the footsteps of my matriarchs and become a third-generation registered nurse. In high school, I became a certified nursing assistant and upon graduating, earned college credits to work towards a nursing degree. I worked as a nursing assistant and am grateful for the opportunities I had to serve countless patients who were assigned to my care.

After earning my Associate of Science degree and taking the nursing program prerequisites, I was accepted to the nursing program on my first application. During the nursing program, I worked as a nursing assistant and passed the nursing exam to be a licensed practical nurse. After working at a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center, I was hired at our local hospital to work as a nursing assistant on the Medical/Oncology floor. After earning my Associate of Science in Nursing degree, I took the nursing exam and was licensed as a registered nurse. I was then hired as a nurse on the same Medical/Oncology floor.

I am grateful for the relationships I formed with my professors, nursing school classmates, coworkers, and patients. I gained strength from their support and learned so much from their insights and examples. During college, the nursing program, and the hospital’s nurse residency program, the stress and irregular sleep schedule caused me to experience firsthand how poor nutrition, lack of sleep, and stress could negatively affect health. I learned to do my best to reduce stress and prioritize sleep and nutrition to maintain my emotional and physical health.

I continued my education for my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree while working as a nurse at the hospital. During my bachelor’s degree, I found out that I was pregnant with my first child and at six months pregnant graduated Summa Cum Laude. Post-bachelor’s degree, I had opportunities to be a preceptor for the local university’s nursing program and a clinical coach for the hospital’s nurse residency program. I was able to broaden my scope of knowledge while being an active member of the hospital’s Clinical Excellence Committee and Infection Control Committee.

After graduating with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and working as a nurse, I gave birth to my first child. Based on our family’s schedule and needs, I transitioned to being home full-time. Interspersed in my time as a stay-at-home mom, I worked as an on-call home health and hospice nurse and clinical instructor for my local school district’s certified nursing assistant program. I was grateful to have the opportunity to give back to the programs that gave me my start years back. I continue to keep my nursing license and knowledge active through online continuing education.

Over the years as a nursing assistant, registered nurse, and clinical instructor, I was able to provide education, resources, and support for patients in making improvements to their health. As a nurse, I feel the importance of promoting health and preventing disease in our community. To improve the community, we first need to start in our own homes. As a mother of three young children, I focus on creating wholesome meals and wellness routines to promote familial health. As a mom who is concerned about the well-being of my family, I continue to seek out resources, information, and external support to make those lifestyle changes to improve my family’s wellness. Nourishing family members in all aspects of wellness (emotional, physical, occupational, social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, and financial) is so important!

As a young mother, I started BRE HEALTHY to continue promoting health in the community and to share the things I’ve learned to improve the well-being of my family. I started writing articles and creating videos about nutrition, health, fitness, and wholesome family recreation. Through BRE HEALTHY, I promote that familial wellness starts at home through wholesome food, fitness, and family time. The mission of BRE HEALTHY is to promote whole family wellness.

The holistic lifestyle that my family was pursuing was harmonious with the farm life we desired to live. On our small farm, we raise horses and cattle and cultivate a productive garden. We find great pleasure in tending to our livestock. Learning to cook from scratch in my garden has been so fulfilling and grounding! To preserve our homegrown produce, I continued family traditions of canning and dehydrating the bounty. I’ve furthered my cooking skills by fermenting foods like kefir, yogurt, sourdough, and Amish friendship bread. I believe it is so beneficial for families to have access to economical and fresh food and be able to see where food comes from! I truly believe there are so many familial and physical benefits of home-cooking and eating together as a family!

I desire parents and children alike to be active, playful, and strong. There is great importance in families participating in recreational activities that draw them closer together as a family and promote physical fitness. Daily walks, mindfulness practices, and physical activities are so good for families! Climb those literal and figurative mountains! We’re all walking each other home!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a website and blog from scratch is daunting! I’ve been able to self-educate myself through reading books and blog articles to learn skills to build BRE HEALTHY. I had to learn to be ok with being a beginner!

Life is full of high mountains and low valleys, which in turn make a beautiful landscape! With that being said, there have been some roadblocks and speed bumps on my journey to where I am now with BRE HEALTHY. There were times when I had to put BRE HEALTHY on the back burner while I focused on the health of our family. Right after I started my blog, I gave birth to my second baby. After his delivery, he developed pneumonia and a left-sided pneumothorax (collapsing lung). He stayed in the NICU for a week and was on at-home oxygen and monitoring for a month. He and my young family were my top priority. A year later, I was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma on my face and had a little bit of my nose surgically removed. I made sure to give myself time to properly heal emotionally and physically.

I am grateful for the learning journey and for the connections I have made while blogging. Everything we experience in this life is for our betterment and improvement. I am grateful for the life experiences that have brought BRE HEALTHY to where it is today.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I find, create, test, and share wholesome family-friendly recipes through posts and videos. I share recreational activity ideas for families and promote whole family wellness. My husband and I raise horses and cattle on our small farm. I’ve supported my children in running a farmstand selling homegrown pumpkins.

My greatest satisfaction is in raising my three sweet children with my supportive husband. I am grateful for the opportunity I had to earn a Bachelor of Science In Nursing Degree and graduate Summa Cum Laude. I have been an active member of the health industry and nursing profession since 2009. My nursing experience includes long-term care, rehabilitation, medical, oncology, home health, hospice, and clinical education.

Through my blog, my friends have expressed to me that I am an example of a happy mom and that I have been a source of calmness and peace. I’ve been able to give asked advice on how to stay motivated as a mother and ways to improve interpersonal relationships. I’ve had wonderful opportunities to teach health, fitness, and first-aid classes to groups of young girls. Through my platform, I’ve been able to give resources for cooking, first-aid, and emergency preparedness. I am so grateful for my supportive community!
