Exploring Life & Business with Leo Cuesta of Uncharted Earth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leo Cuesta. Them and their team share their story with us below:

When Leo left Colombia in 2010 and moved back home to the Philippines to set up Uncharted there, he was confident that he would establish the best adventure travel company in the country. What he didn’t expect was the disappointment of numerous happy customers by the fact that his company only offered travel services in the Philippines – if only Uncharted could take them around other countries as well! So in 2015 Leo moved to the United States and set up Uncharted Earth to take people to the other little-known yet wondrous places on this planet.

Leo grew up paddling canoes and riding water buffalos on his dad’s farm in the Philippines. He spent his early twenties hiking, diving, traveling, and working in leisure real estate development. In 2006 he decided to follow his passion for adventure travel, but he wanted a method to his madness. The following year he was in Boston, Massachusetts getting his MBA from Babson College, a business school known for entrepreneurship.

While studying Leo worked with Earthwatch Institute and gained valuable insight into sustainable travel. After graduation, he moved to Colombia to work with a company that ran summer camps and nature tours, and there he learned the intricacies of running adventure trips in a developing country. In 2010, feeling that he had learned enough, Leo moved back to the Philippines and has been running the country’s best adventure travel company since.

Leo now runs Uncharted Earth in Las Vegas, Nevada, and makes regular trips to the Philippines and Colombia to meet with his teams, develop new trips, and do the things that he misses in the desert like diving and kayaking. He lives twelve minutes away from Red Rock Canyon and spends his free time hiking and climbing with his wife and keeping their dog out of trouble with roadrunners and ground squirrels.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Covid-19 was more than a challenge, it was an off-switch. We had to close up business for almost 2 years.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Uncharted Earth?
Uncharted Earth (www.uncharted-earth.com) is an adventure travel company that specializes in active nature trips in off-the-beaten-path destinations. It has three sub-brands, each focusing on a different country or region.

Uncharted Earth’s trips are low profile, low impact, local and authentic. We believe this is the best way to travel and the best way to give their guests an exceptional experience. The places that we go to are special and we want to preserve their nature and local culture as best they can.

Uncharted West (www.unchartedwest.com) organizes self-driven tours in the Western United States. The country’s most spectacular landscapes and National Parks are found in the western states of California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Washington, Oregon, and Alaska. Uncharted West puts together customized trips to help people explore and enjoy Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Zion, Big Sur, the Olympics, Denali, Death Valley, and many other amazing places in the West. Trips include hotel bookings, guided activities, and detailed instructions on how to do self-guided portions.

Uncharted Philippines (www.unchartedphilippines.com) runs guided tours in this lesser-known but amazing Southeast Asian country. The Philippines is an archipelago of over 7,000 islands. It has stunning beaches and rich rainforests and coral reefs. It also has a unique culture that blends Asian, Spanish, and American influences. Uncharted Philippines takes people to experience the best of the country through boat expeditions, mountain treks, rainforest hikes, and SCUBA diving/snorkeling trips.

Uncharted Colombia (www.unchartedcolombia.com) offers guided tours in this geographically and culturally diverse South American nation. Colombia is in the tropics so it has tropical beaches and rainforests including part of the Amazon, but it also has glaciated mountains and lush high-elevation tundras called paramos that are found in only two other countries.

Colombia also has many different indigenous people and races, each with its own unique traditions and customs. Uncharted Colombia takes guests to all these different environments and lets them interact with the country’s various people to get a truly remarkable travel experience.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
– Social media will become the most important marketing tool for the industry.

– Pent-up demand from Covid-19 will cause a travel boom for the next couple of years.

– Adventure travel will gain a bigger share of the tourism pie because people will want to visit less crowded destinations and nature areas.

– Professional travel agents and planners will become increasingly relevant because there is too much junk information on the internet.
