Hidden Gems: Meet Christine Heninger of Pure Paws

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Heninger.

Hi Christine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always been into Health and Wellness. When my girl dog, Sky started having seizures at 5 years old, it was devastating! The meds helped but the side effects were horrendous. I found a local holistic vet and started taking her there. Why wouldn’t I treat my dogs naturally, if I do it myself? It was during these visits that I realized, dogs cannot live on kibble alone and get the nutrients they need, to fight different diseases. We started treating her naturally for the most part, and saw a lot of improvement. A couple of years down the road, my husband and I decided to start a holistic pet store. We had seen the power behind nutrition and good food, and wanted to offer it to all dog and cat parents. This is where Pure Paws was born. We did not have a lot of money to get started, but we found a really cute affordable storefront, and started the process from there. The day we received our keys, was the same day I found out our 9-year-old boy dog had cancer, and needed immediate surgery. Talk about an emotional day. So, we had to deal with getting the shop ready, and nursing my sweet boy back to health. It was a huge challenge for us, but we pushed through and opened our doors 6 weeks later. Starting a small business is not easy, it’s stressful and takes time to build clientele, especially with little funds. However, we are happy to report, our boy lived another 3 years, thanks to the power of real nutrition. Unfortunately, Hurley passed last summer and it was the hardest thing we’ve ever been through. We recently adopted two puppies who are helping us heal. The shop continues to grow, we are extremely grateful and love what we do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been many challenges along the way, but not without blessings.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in holistic pet care. Everything from raw food, healthy kibble and treats, to chemical-free grooming products, supplements and herbal tinctures.

There are a few things that set us apart, in my opinion. First, I will not compromise on the product. If I don’t like the ingredients, I simply won’t carry it. There’s a lot of junk out there, and not everything that says natural on it, is. And I only carry supplements that give good results. Most of which I have given to my own furbabies. 😁

Secondly, we have created a more intimate environment, where all of our customers are considered friends. We want everyone to feel at home here.

Our shop is small but it is also mighty. We were voted Best of Holladay, three years in a row. It’s validation that we are doing a good job. There is a lot of love here. A lot of tears and laughter too.
