A Life in Translation and Transformation
When Swiss-born Ève Dupertuis arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1997, she brought with her more than a suitcase and a dream – she carried a love of language and an entrepreneurial spark that soon gave life to Ève Dupertuis Translation Services Inc., an English-to-French translation business still thriving today. Through her work, Ève has spent nearly three decades bridging cultures, crafting meaning across borders, and helping countless clients bridge linguistic and cultural divides.
A traveler at heart, Ève journeyed around the world with her future husband before marrying in his native Sri Lanka. Together they have raised two daughters who continue to inspire her every day. When her younger daughter was born with Down Syndrome, Ève found herself immersed in a new community she had not known existed, one defined by compassion, generosity and shared understanding. Her desire to nurture culture and community also found expression early on, when as a new mother, she founded a French Reading Group for Children. What began as a modest gathering soon blossomed into a thriving hub of up to 30 French-speaking families, divided into three age-based groups. For seven lively years, Ève, with the help of other French-speaking parents, curated stories, crafts, and cultural experiences that helped children celebrate and connect with their francophone roots. “It was a joyful, creative time”, she recalls “a time of sharing, laughter, and building friendship through language.”
Ève is also a mixed media artist with an MFA in visual arts. She describes herself as someone who “looks at life through the hole of creativity.” Her collages, and travel-inspired works reflect her deep curiosity and belief that creativity is a universal language. Ève’s artistic curiosity also led her toward Creative Journaling, a practice that merges self-expression with introspection. Trained in this method, she began designing workshops primarily for women, encouraging participants to awaken their inner creativity. “It’s about giving people permission to explore,” she says. “To express themselves freely, to play, to remember that creativity is our birthright.” Her creative journey also intertwines with healing. A Reiki master with a private practice, Ève guides others toward balance and well-being. Recently, Ève added a new rhythm to her repertoire learning to play the hand drum, finding joy in yet another form of expression.
Whether translating words or emotions, Ève continues to embody a simple yet powerful philosophy: life, like language, is meant to be interpreted with the heart. “I always have plenty of ideas and projects,” she says with a smile, “and I love making them come alive.”
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Coming to Utah from Switzerland meant navigating a new culture, a new language, and a different way of life. There were moments of uncertainty and adjustment — finding my place, building connections, and learning to express myself in a world that felt both familiar and foreign. Marrying a man from a Sri Lankan-American background added another rich layer of cultural discovery, teaching me to see life through multiple lenses at once. Raising a daughter with Down Syndrome brought its own set of challenges, but also immeasurable joy and perspective. Each of these experiences — immigration, cross-cultural marriage, and parenting a child with special needs — shaped me into a more compassionate, open, and resilient person. They have made me, in every sense, a richer and deeper human being.

I founded Ève Dupertuis Translation Services, Inc. in 1997, not long after moving to Utah from Switzerland. At the time, I was looking for a way to keep my native language — French — alive in my daily life, and translation felt like the perfect bridge between my two worlds. Over the years, I’ve built a career as a freelance English-to-French translator, working with clients across the United States, as well as in Canada and Europe.
I specialize in marketing translation and cultural adaptation, helping businesses convey not just words but tone, nuance, and intent — making sure their message truly resonates with French-speaking audiences. I also work extensively in the computer and IT fields, where accuracy and clarity are essential. What sets my work apart is my focus on cultural authenticity and attention to detail; I don’t just translate text, I translate meaning.
The translation industry has evolved tremendously since I began — especially now with the rise of AI — but I see technology as a tool, not a replacement. What I am most proud of is maintaining a personal, human touch in my work. My goal has always been to connect people and ideas across languages with care and precision, something no algorithm can quite replicate.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe my success comes from a combination of courage and persistence. Moving to a new country and starting a business from scratch required me to step out of my comfort zone and not be afraid to put myself out there. I have learned to seize opportunities as they come and to trust that each new challenge brings growth. Networking and building genuine relationships have also played a big role — being friendly, open, and curious has connected me with wonderful clients and collaborators over the years. Finally, my commitment to attention to detail and quality has been essential; in translation, as in art and life, precision and care make all the difference.
