Life & Work with Conner Grimes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Conner Grimes.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started Intermountain Playscapes three years ago. At the time, I was working as an operations Manager for a local Landscaping company. I had grown up working in landscaping with my dad, specifically as a carpenter building landscape structures. I am also an artist and have always wanted to build a career for myself that would allow me to design and create. My idea for Playscapes was to become the most creative carpentry company out there. Our products would include custom playhouses, treehouses, pergolas, sheds, foam carvings, and more. Three years later, we now have a small warehouse where we build our unique structures and ship them out all over the country. Here locally, we partner with Viridian Landscapes and Edge Custom Pools to build all of their beautiful landscape structures. We have a great team of hardworking craftsmen. We pride ourselves on attention to detail and our creative designs. I look forward to pushing this company and myself as we build bigger and better structures for our awesome clients.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I believe that anything in life that is worth it is not easy. Starting this company has not always been a smooth path. Our challenges are not unique to us and are faced by most, if not all new companies in the construction industry. Some of those challenges include creating a reputation, finding qualified team members to work with us, identifying our market and clientele, and so on. Due to the unique nature of this company, there have also been challenges that we have faced that are not as typical. One of those challenges has been the logistics of shipping and installing such large and heavy structures in other states. We know that there are many things we will continue to learn as we grow, but I am happy with how far we have come thus far.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My role in the company has changed and continues to adapt as the company grows. I started out doing everything myself. Designing, building, running the company, accounting, and so much more as every small business owner know. As we have grown, I have hired excellent people that help build our projects and manage the logistics of this unique company. I still design by hand all of our structures and love to work with my hands on each of the projects as much as possible. I am most proud of our design process, which only involves me and a piece of paper. I love seeing these designs come to life in our shop or on-site.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Although there are many people who have helped me along the way, my dad has been one of the largest mentors to me in this career. He is a business owner and has created a reputation as one of the best landscape designers and builders in the state. He has helped me throughout my life to create a strong work ethic and to learn how to start and run a business. That being said, no one has done as much to help me start and grow this company as my wife, Brittany. She has been incredible through her never-ending support and patience, even on the nights I have had to work well into the next day.
