Meet AJ Ranasinghe of Down To Earth Movement

Today we’d like to introduce you to AJ Ranasinghe.

Hi AJ, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started hosting automotive events in 2016. I had noticed many auto events did not have the full-on production feel that other sporting/entertainment events had and were lacking a family-friendly environment. I had the vision to create a community that celebrates the automotive culture and its enthusiasts by providing premium events that were family-friendly and could inspire the next generation!

That’s when Down To Earth was born. It’s not about your car being low, that is a common misconception. It is about being humble, respectful, and protecting our culture so we have something to hand down to our kids.

I saved up all of my money to host our first event in Colorado in 2016. In fact, I have a framed bank statement on my wall that shows $21 left in my account after I pulled out all of my savings to fund that first event. It is a gentle reminder that creating a unique life requires significant risks, and that money comes and goes but experiences last forever.

That first event went exceptionally well for a kid that just had a vision, and here we are 6 years later!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been far from smooth! Haha. Being a young kid that started Down To Earth, I had to work on my professionalism when dealing with sponsors and being able to clearly communicate big picture ideas. Professionalism is so important to me. Whether you are inking deals for fortune 500 companies or organizing car shows, being professional yet personable has become our organization’s bread and butter! I know that the companies we work with really appreciate that.

And much like other businesses, COVID in 2022 was a very tough time to get through. We were not permitted to do any type of event, and it was a terrible feeling of stagnation for an entire year. But the community kept our hopes up. The community is what keeps this whole thing going.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Down To Earth Movement?
Down To Earth Movement is an organization that hosts premium automotive events. At all of our events, we promote a family-friendly environment that is centered around the love for automotive machines.

At the heart of it, all car shows are the same. So we asked ourselves, ‘What can we do differently?’. Questions like that are what created this wonderful formula for our events. You will see kids running around, grandparents, adults, and teenagers, all there to admire someone’s vehicle. It is such a beautiful thing.

We do extensive training with our event staff, graphic designers, advertising specialists, and the entire team to make sure people are welcome with a smile. I am most proud about that, honestly.

If you ever come to a Down To Earth event, I am confident you will feel the difference.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is being able to wake up with a smile every day, smell the wonderful air, and be excited to tackle the unknown that comes with every new day. I also believe success is making a positive impact on people’s lives. Every conversation you have with someone is an opportunity to leave a long-lasting impression, and I try to do that as often as possible!

I think many of us wrestle with the idea that success comes in the form of monetary value. But I remind myself that happiness is the key to life. I am so grateful I get to hold that key!
