Meet Joshua Elijah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Elijah.

Hi Joshua, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always loved photography, but I didn’t want to make it a career because I thought it wasn’t a career that pays well. I always thought my friends would laugh at me that I’m a photographer. Sometime in February this year, I thought of acquiring a skill since I wasn’t doing anything. I thought about it for days but couldn’t figure out anything, and as time goes, I became very depressed because I still couldn’t figure out what to do. Then, I decided to bring up the topic in a chat with my cousin to get ideas from him. He told me that I should think of something that gives me joy whenever I’m doing it, and I shouldn’t bother about what people will say as far as it makes me happy. The first thought that came to my mind was photography. I quickly went to my gallery and started viewing the pictures I took months back, and when I posted them, everyone was commenting that I should get a camera and that I was delaying my God’s given talent. That was when I decided to go into photography full-time, but since I couldn’t afford a DSLR or any good camera, I decided to change my phone to get another one with a good camera lens. I started watching smartphone photography tutorials on YouTube; while watching a tutorial video on how to do some gimbal moves using your smartphone with Steve (learn online video), he talked about skillshare, an online learning platform with thousands of creative courses and classes taught by experts to help you learn new skills and that the first 1,000 people to use his link will get a 1-month free trial of skillshare, so I decided to take the opportunity. I started taking pictures of flowers, the sky, trees, and anything about nature; also I started taking pictures of my friends around just to make sure I have something new each day. Watching my photography grow over the months has inspired me so much to keep progressing; I love nature photography because to me, it reveals the true beauty of God’s creations. I hope to travel around the world to show everyone the beauty of nature and to make this a career one day.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Getting started with photography wasn’t easy at all. I couldn’t afford any of the things I needed; since I couldn’t afford a camera, I had to download videos online to learn how my phone camera worked, learn to edit, and so many other things about photography. I was so scared because I was intimidated by the number of professional photographers out there. But I later understand that there’s a space for everyone. Nothing can dim the light that shines from within, and as a light, we’re meant to shine for others to follow.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I mainly do travel/nature photography because outdoor photography is something I love so much. I would say I’m a smartphone photographer because I take and edit all my photos with my smartphone, which makes it easier and fast for me, and also, I do smartphone videography as well as color grading. I make my own presets

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is the ability to reach your planned goals in life, whatever those goals may be, achieve desired visions, and be fulfilled, happy, safe, healthy, and loved.
