Meet Matthew Toone of Layton, UT

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Toone.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was 22 years old, I wanted to be a Physical Therapist. However, in high school I got a ‘C’ in Chemistry. When I went to my college counselor to learn what was required to become a PT, they said I had to take: chemistry, physiology, physics, biology, etc. I said ‘Chemistry’ – I’m out. And I walked out of that counselors office and never pursued it. I went into business with the goal to start my own business, and after about 10 years basically said ‘what am I doing’ and ‘why didn’t I become a PT.’ At age 33, married and with 5 kids, I decided to quit my job and go back to school to become a PT. I was determined to do whatever it took to become a PT – even take Chemistry.

Well, I worked my tail off, in Chemistry, and all the science classes, and I got into PT school.

Fastforward years (there is so much more to this story 🙂 and I had the opportunity to buy the clinic I’m in now, but everyone around me told me to not do it, that is was a dying business and wouldn’t work. I took the risk and bought it. I knew if I worked hard enough, I could make it successful. When I bought it, it was just me, we saw 50 patients p/week, and had 3 employees. For the last 4 years I’ve worked my tail off and grown the company to 2 clinics, 350+ patients per week, 17 employees and still growing.

There is so much more to the story, but that is the basis of it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not. Entrepreneurship and success never is easy – it is a grind. I’ve had so many set backs along the way. I’ve had to exit a franchise, change billing companies, employees trying to sabatoge me, made the wrong hires, tried things that failed, etc. There are so many things. It’s been a lot of hard work and perseverance.
