Meet Megan Beal of Urban Property Management

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Beal.

Megan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been in real estate since the early 2000s. I started by working behind the scenes for some of the top homebuilders—doing accounting, helping with sales, and learning the ins and outs of the industry. Over time, I gained enough experience to become my own broker and had a passion for new construction and home design and spent most my time at model homes. The work was exciting but demanding—long hours, high pressure, and little time for myself.

During those years, I became a mother to two sets of twins. My first set were diagnosed as autistic at age three and then tragically , my daughter from my second set passed away, and the weight of that grief, combined with the demands of work and motherhood, took a heavy toll on my health. I went on to have two more children, but I continued to put everything and everyone else first—except myself. The stress and constant hustle caused me to gain a significant amount of weight, and I found myself completely burned out.

Eventually, I knew something had to change. I stepped away from new construction and moved into property management. I started working for a company, but their systems didn’t align with my vision of how things should be run. That’s when I decided to launch my own property management brokerage.

While making huge changes, I made the decision to prioritize myself for the first time in decades. I hired a nutritionist and a fitness trainer and committed to showing up for my own health the way I’d always shown up for others. It wasn’t easy, but I stuck with it—and to date, I’ve lost 185 pounds. I feel stronger, more balanced, and more fulfilled than ever.

My business, Urban Property Management, has grown faster than I ever imagined. I now have a team of amazing people working with me, and I’m proud of the systems, relationships, and reputation we’ve built. I love what I do—but even more, I love that I’ve created a life that makes space for what brings me joy.

I’ve always had a passion for travel and adventure. Exploring new places, meeting new people, and learning about different cultures fills me up, and I love sharing those experiences with others.

In recent years, I’ve had the opportunity to take part in several humanitarian trips that have deeply impacted my life and fueled my passion for giving back. I’ve traveled to Peru and twice to Tanzania, Africa through a non profit called Rafiki —experiences that were nothing short of life-changing. In Tanzania, we spent time in a rural Maasai village, helped at a local school, drilled a clean water well, and organized medical and dental clinics that served over 700 people. It was humbling and inspiring to be part of something so meaningful, and it reminded me of the importance of using our time and resources to lift others. Giving back in this way has become a true passion of mine, and it’s something I hope to continue doing throughout my life.

I also love inspiring people—especially women and moms—who feel stuck or overwhelmed. I want them to know that it’s never too late to take back your health, rebuild your confidence, or chase your dreams.

My story is one of loss, growth, reinvention, and resilience. I’ve learned that our greatest challenges can become the foundation for our most powerful transformations—and I’m living proof that with grit and grace, you really can build the life you were meant to live.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. But every bump shaped who I am today. There have been many struggles along the way—some personal, some professional.

One of the most painful chapters in my life was losing my daughter. The grief was overwhelming, and I didn’t have the tools or time to process it properly because life just kept moving. I poured myself into work but I neglected my own well-being in the process. I gained a significant amount of weight and was constantly exhausted, both emotionally and physically.

On top of that, I was working in environments where I often felt undervalued and overlooked. I can’t count the number of times I felt I had to work twice as hard just to be seen or taken seriously—because of how I looked on the outside. There was this constant pressure to prove that I was capable, smart, and worthy, even though my results spoke for themselves.

I still vividly remember a four-hour interview with a major builder. They loved all of my ideas, asked tons of questions, and even implemented many of my suggestions. But in the end, they hired someone else—when informing me, they said they ultimately decided on someone who “fit the look they were going for.” That moment crushed me. It wasn’t just about a missed opportunity—it was about being dismissed for reasons that had nothing to do with my skill or vision.

Starting my own company was incredibly difficult. I didn’t have all the answers, and I had to learn a lot—fast. But I was determined. I knew there was a better way to manage properties, one that was more efficient, more communicative, and more human. I wanted to create systems that worked not just for owners, but for tenants too. I wanted people to feel seen, heard, and respected—something I hadn’t always felt in my own career.

Looking back, every hardship prepared me to build something better—not just a business, but a life of so many trials and joys that I’m super proud of.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Urban Property Management ?
Urban Property Management grew out of a mix of experience, frustration, and a desire to do things differently. After years in real estate and property management, I saw firsthand how many companies were stuck in outdated systems—hard to reach, slow to respond, and disconnected from the real people behind the properties. I knew there had to be a better way. So I started my own company.

We specialize in residential property management across Salt Lake and Utah Counties, and what really sets us apart isn’t just our services—it’s our approach. Property management, at its core, is about people. And too often, both tenants and property owners feel like just another number. We’ve worked hard to change that. At Urban Property Management, we’re known for being accessible, responsive, and real. We don’t hide behind red tape or corporate speak—we communicate clearly, handle things quickly, and treat every home like it matters, because it does.

That same care extends to the homeowners associations (HOAs) we manage. I understand that HOAs can be the backbone of a neighborhood—but only when they’re managed well. We take pride in helping boards navigate complex decisions, organize finances clearly, maintain beautiful communities, and communicate effectively with homeowners. I’ve built systems that take the stress off volunteer board members while giving them the transparency and tools they need to lead confidently. It’s all about supporting people so they can feel proud of where they live.

My own life has been full of challenges—loss, health struggles, and moments where it would’ve been easier to give up. But those experiences shaped how I lead this company. I understand what it means to feel overlooked, underestimated, or ignored—and I make sure our clients and tenants never feel that way. I’ve built a team that shares those values: people who genuinely care, who take pride in doing things right, and who believe that even small details matter.

We don’t charge up-front fees, and we only succeed when our owners do. We use modern tools and technology, but we’re also grounded in old-school values like trust, reliability, and doing what we say we’ll do. I’m proud of the systems we’ve built, but I’m even more proud of the relationships we’ve earned.

This business has grown faster than I ever imagined, and I think that’s because people can feel the difference. We’re not perfect, but we show up, we care, and we don’t give up. And to me, that’s what makes a good property management company

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was the oldest of five kids, raised by a stay-at-home mom and a hardworking dad in the construction and ironwork business. Watching him build things from the ground up gave me a real appreciation for structure, hard work, and the process of creating something lasting—qualities that would shape my path later in life.

I grew up in Southern California until I was 16, when we moved back to Utah. I was always a strong student—straight A’s, AP classes, and multiple college scholarship offers. I’ve always loved learning and was the type of kid who could memorize just about anything (a skill that’s stuck with me!). In fact, on my first date with my now-husband of 26 years, I completely shocked him by singing along word-for-word to every song on the radio as he flipped through stations. It’s a fun little talent I credit to summers spent with my Nana and Papa in Utah, who gave me a deep love for music.

I’m a Sagittarius through and through—curious, adventurous, social, and full of energy. I’ve always loved people and new experiences, and I get a lot of joy out of sharing excitement and helping others see what’s possible. I always dreamed of becoming a mom, though that didn’t come easily. I struggled with fertility for six years, and during that time, I threw myself into real estate. It became more than a job—it was a way to help people with one of the biggest moments in their lives. I used to say it was the closest thing to being an attorney which is what I wanted to be as a child but without seeing people lose cases—instead, I got to be part of helping them achieve the dream of homeownership.

Looking back, I think my upbringing gave me the drive, resilience, and integrity that I still carry with me in life and in business.
