Meet Megan Thompson of Nibley, UT

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Thompson.

Hi Megan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started freelancing for my friend who is a florist in the summer of 2021. It was intimidating to learn a new skill at first, but I fell in love with flowers and designing quickly! I had a 1 year old baby at the time and the creativity and work was an incredible outlet for me. I got a new job as a social worker at a hospital shortly after I started freelancing. I continued freelancing through that time, though, because it brought so much peace and joy into my life. Especially doing a job such as social work, which can be heavy at times. Once my son was born I quit my other job to be home for my kids more and picked up more work freelancing. I learned most of what I know now from my friend and other florists I side by side with. After about 2.5 years of freelancing, I decided to take the jump and start Wild Jo Florals at the end of 2023. It has been the best ride! I have had a lot to learn about running a business and still have more to learn, especially the behind the scenes. I’ve had to build a lot of confidence in myself and my style. It has continued to be worth it and adds so much to my life working with flowers! It balances me out in all the roles I have in my life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been bumps in the roads. Just after I started my business, we moved to Missouri for my husbands schooling. We were there for a short time before things changed again and brought us back to Utah. My business was on pause during that time, so when we got back to Utah it felt like I had to start back over from scratch. Building my clientele back up felt daunting and discouraging. Especially when I would go long periods of time without inquiries. But I have learned that as long as I keep at it and put in the work, it gets noticed and my business continues to grow. Things didn’t happen as quickly as I hoped, but having grit and continuing to put in the work does pay off! It has been kind of like a snowball effect. I got one or two weddings, and then those would roll into more inquiries and bookings.

Also, being a stay at home mom to two littles has added some stress as well. It has been a balancing act of being home enough for my kids and making sure I’m honoring that role as their mom with work schedules, sometimes traveling, finding childcare, and being a reliable worker. There are moments that I feel spread thin or like I can’t balance it all, but finding a way to navigate it has always been worth it as it’s enriched my life so much. And it definitely couldn’t be done without the support of my husband, family, and friends. It’s a lot of trial and error on all fronts of running a business!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a florist and design flower arrangements for all types of events. Most of my work as been in the wedding industry, but I also do funeral arrangements, dance flowers, everyday arrangements, or other events taking place. I love the whole process of design. I love creating the mood boards, flower libraries, designing it on paper, and seeing it come to life. I’m really proud of how far I’ve come from when I started my business to now. I lacked confidence when first starting my business and wasn’t sure if people would trust me to do their flowers. At the beginning of 2025 I designed a ceremony piece for a styled shoot that had been my biggest design yet. Seeing what I had created on paper come to life and seeing it turn out how I had envisioned was an incredible feeling! It grew my confidence exponentially. I

Something that sets me apart is that I want my clients to be involved every step of the way. With the first quote, before my clients book me, I send out a packet including the estimated pricing, moodboard, and flower library so they can see what I’m envisioning right from the start, and make sure it aligns with their vision. Every single client is so important to me, whether or not they book me, which is why it’s worth it for me to put in the work from the first interaction. I do my best to keep them involved every step of the way to make sure when the day comes, they are able to see their vision come to life.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I work all throughout Utah, but specifically Northern Utah. One of my favorite things to do is drive through the canyons in Utah, especially Sardine Canyon, since that is where my commute is most often. It is so beautiful with all the trees and grasses and wildflowers. I’m in love with the mountains and draw a lot of inspiration from them!

I also love that there is so much opportunity in Utah. A challenge of that is definitely that it can feel saturated at times, but I feel like at least where I’m at, we are all cheering each other on and rooting for each other and it hasn’t felt competitive, which has been amazing. It’s been so fun to connect with other florists here and learn from them as well!
