Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittanna Roberts Kercher.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in Midway, Utah and fell in love with art while in high school. My art teacher had such a profound influence on me that I decided to study Art Education in college. I graduated from Utah Valley University with my bachelor’s in Art Education and was the 2022 School of the Arts Valedictorian. I have a passion for art and learning, and sharing my love of both as a teacher. I have been teaching high school art for the past few years, and will be going into my 4th year of teaching this fall. I absolutely love seeing my students explore, learn, and develop their artistic skills.
Not only do I love teaching art, but I am passionate about creating art as well. In 2024 I started seriously prioritizing my own artistic practice and developing my voice. I primarily work in oil painting, but enjoy watercolor and printmaking as well. I have had artworks accepted into a number of galleries and shows around Utah and neighboring states and can’t wait to see where it goes from here!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Imposter syndrome is definitely a real struggle when it comes to being an artist. There are so many artists at different levels of experience in their career, that it has been scary to put my art out there and feel like I belong. I feel like there is so much to learn along the road and I am often in awe of the artists that ‘make it’. But honestly, I’m sure if I talked to those artists, they would say something similar as everyone has their own difficulties feeling confident in their work.
I’m really working right now to find my audience and the people who see and connect to my work, and know it will come as I keep getting my work out there for people to see.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am deeply inspired by nature and have always gravitated towards landscape painting. I love the stories nature tells, and the way landscape art can take you back to a memory, a place, or a feeling. I create paintings that will pull you into the landscape itself to experience all the adventure and storytelling it has to offer.
Many of my recent paintings show reflective water, which I have found is one of the best ways to capture the essence of why I go into nature- to feel at peace and reflect on where I am in my life. My vision is to create artwork that emulates the peace and serenity that comes from being out in nature, and draw people into the scene so they can experience it too.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I am an Irish dancer and competed at the World Irish Dance Championships in Belfast in 2022. Together, my sisters and I started Wasatch Back Irish Dance, an Irish dance studio in the Heber Valley. We currently have over 50 students and love to share our passion for Irish dance with our community!
