Rising Stars: Meet Christina Ausley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Ausley.

Christina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been a food, travel, and lifestyle writer for around six years now. I’ve written professionally for magazines and newspapers in cities like London, Seattle, and Portland.

Now, I’m exploring Utah for the years to come! I live in Salt Lake City and plan to stay here for quite some time—I absolutely love this state!

As I mentioned, I worked for food/travel publications for years. I now work in software full-time, but still wanted to keep my passion for covering the hospitality industry around. When I moved to Utah, I was incredibly inspired by the growing food and hospitality scene and really wanted to both encourage myself to explore this scene and also encourage others to explore our state.

Thus, Salt Lake City Secrets was born so I could begin a journey through the food and travel scene within Utah, and invite others with the same passions along for the ride! Food makes me happy. Travel makes me happy. Exploring small businesses makes me happy. Most people agree.

Thus, I’ve kickstarted my own little blog to both share my finds with you, and learn from you longtime Utah foodies, shoppers, and travelers! This is a space to learn about our local eateries, small businesses, and nearby travel destinations, a space to encourage our restauranteurs and hospitable travel entities.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Rarely in life do we find smooth roads, and to me, that’s what keeps things exciting and encourages me to keep growing. When I first launched the account, I was worried about finding a community that might be interested in the same things I’m interested in.

We all worry about finding those communities throughout our lives. Encouragingly, I was blown away by the immediate interest of fellow foodies and travelers all across Utah. The encouragement from these followers who have joined in on my Salt Lake City Secrets journey is what motivates me to keep doing what I do with this account.

It really goes to show how much support there is for restaurants and tourism industries all across Utah. It also goes to show how many niche communities exist across our state.

I also love getting so many recommendations from folks who have both lived here a short time and those who have spent their entire lives here. When I launched the account, I wasn’t an expert on the food/travel scene around Utah yet. I had a lot of learning to do.

That’s why I really consider Salt Lake City Secrets a “journey,” because I’m learning as I go and taking so many amazing recommendations daily.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in food, travel, and lifestyle across Utah. I cover restaurants, museums, seasonal activities, ski resorts, and travel destinations across the state.

There are so many amazing foodies and travel accounts showcasing so many incredible businesses, groups, and places across Utah, so I’m excited to launch an account that touches a little bit of everything across Utah — not just food, not just travel, but all of these outlets that make Utah, well, Utah!

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’m so happy to have found a community of support since I launched Salt Lake City Secrets.

I’ve met so many incredible people who are both visiting and blown away by our beautiful state, and I’ve met people who have lived here for years, among years of change, and have incredible hole-in-the-wall recommendations for places I’ve got to visit.

These adventures, whether they be nabbing a gargantuan sandwich from a Jewish deli, biking through burnt orange canyons in Moab, uncovering a new must-do hike through slot canyons in one of our many state parks, or slicing into the state’s best slice of tiramisu, are the memories we make and remember our entire lives.

We make these memories on soul-searching solo trips, with the people we love, with the children we’ve raised. This is what we’ll remember at the end of our lives — the adventures we’ve had in the place we call home. I’m so honored to play a small part in highlighting the businesses, groups, and places that leave these lasting memories.
