Rising Stars: Meet Edith Karras

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edith Karras.

Hi Edith, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I’ve been taking pictures for over 30 years and have lived in Minneapolis since 1985. Over the decades I’ve participated in shows and art fairs and currently am an artist member and board member of Vine Arts Center. I have used my photographs to create ceramic tiles, posters, scarves, canvas wraps, and framed prints. About two years ago I started looking to create something new with my photographs.

I began researching children’s books and book publishing and realized I could create children’s picture books by starting with a visual story and then adding text. I published my first book with Beaver’s Pond Press in the Spring of 2022, entitled “Let’s Go For a Wander”. The book is colorful, vibrant, multi-racial, and is a sweet little story of what one might encounter while exploring a city park through the seasons. I plan to begin my second book with the same publisher in January 2023.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is any road ever truly smooth? The research phase took a long time, and the decision to move forward with a publisher was stressful. I finally realized that I am not made for self-publishing; I work full time and have a son, animals, wife, and house – a full life even without taking pictures and writing books.

Beaver’s Pond Press turned out to be the perfect solution for me but the expense was great, and raising money took a long time. I’m so grateful to all the people that donated money and purchased my book as soon as it came out. If anything is smooth it’s the creative process; that’s the real fun part!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Photography has always been a passion and a hobby. I have made money at it here and there, but I’ve always worked at different jobs – part-time while my wife and I were raising our son, and full-time for the last many years.

I have been an intake specialist with Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid for the last 10-11 years. We assist low-income and disabled people with a variety of legal issues, and what we do is so vital for individuals and the community. My goal is to work for Legal Aid until retirement – which I don’t plan on doing any time soon.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Like everyone these days I use social media to share my photos and promote my endeavors. So far I have not created any videos podcasts, blogs, or attended any book fairs. I’ve been taking it slow but did sell at this summer’s Powderhorn Art Fair. I also have a book launch scheduled at the Vine Arts Gallery in September and a Women’s Art Fair in December. All in good time.
