Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Gwilliam
Hi Ryan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I got started working with dogs because I got a puppy on a whim, and I had no idea how to train him! He was peeing and pooping all over the condo complex I lived in and my neighbors were not happy. I started studying all about dog training to help train him, and it became my addiction.
Before that I worked in the real estate world. Things were going great until the market crashed in 2008. I suddenly found myself without work, a ton of debt, and no way to buy dog food.
I didn’t want to go back to a cubicle or a sales job, so I decided to offer my services as a dog walker.
I was not making anywhere close to the amount of money I was used to, but surprisingly I didn’t care.
I was doing what I loved, hanging out with dogs all day, and teaching people!
I don’t know anyone who cares more about the well-being of dogs than I do. I live for that moment when a dog gets a new skill down! You know that moment when I see it click in a dog’s mind, and they nail the exercise. I friggin’ love that moment.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting Train Walk Poop was a leap of faith. Honestly, I wasn’t sure where I’d land. One of the biggest challenges was balancing my passion for dogs with the reality of running a business. It’s one thing to be a great dog trainer; it’s another to manage a growing team, and keep everything running smoothly.
There were many late nights and early mornings. Days when it felt like I was spinning too many plates and one was always about to crash. Finding the right staff, keeping clients happy, and making sure the dogs were always our top priority was very tricky.
So, no, it hasn’t been smooth. But every bump in the road has made Train Walk Poop that much better. After 17 years we’ve learned a lot. It’s been an awesome journey so far.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Train Walk Poop, we’re all about what’s best for the dog, even when it means helping dog owners understand why we can’t do things exactly how they’d like us too. We’re committed to helping dog owners understand their dogs on a deeper level. Because when you truly “get” your dog, everything falls into place.
We take pride in our ability to teach humans to see the world through their dog’s eyes. It’s not about quick fixes; it’s about true understanding. This leads to happier dogs, faster results, and changes that stick.
What sets us apart? Our long term approach to every decision we make. We always do what’s best for the dog over the long term, even if it means a difficult conversation with the dog and/or their owner. It’s not always the easiest path, but it’s the one that leads to lasting results.
For example, when a dog’s behavior issues come from someone who is spoiling their dog by giving into demanding behavior. Or when a dog owner feels bad about kenneling their dog, even though it’s leading to destructive behavior or accidents.
We love having those conversations. We know that the sooner we talk it through, the sooner we can get their dog feeling better about life. Everyone wins when we communicate quickly and effectively with pet parents.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Oh boy, where do I start? I’ve had so many amazing people help me along the way.
First and foremost, a huge shout-out to Chris Miller. He’s been an incredible, loyal customer from day one. Even when we hit bumps in the road, Chris was there, offering feedback and sticking with us. His belief in what we were building has been a huge boost to our confidence and a real blessing.
Then there’s Heather Beck, a true leader in the dog training world. Heather’s the one who organized events and workshops that fueled my passion for continuous learning. Thanks to her, I got involved with the IACP, the International Association of Canine Professionals, which has been a game-changer. She’s always been there to answer questions and provide guidance, and even now, she’s someone I can rely on for great advice.
We’ve had countless supportive clients and employees who have played pivotal roles in our success. I’m incredibly grateful for their support and encouragement.
