Exploring Life & Business with Kayden Thomas of Skyline Music Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayden Thomas

Hi Kayden, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started playing guitar at a very young age, and dedicated my whole life to it. I went to Snow College for a Bachelor of Music with an emphasis in Commercial Music wanting to provide for my future family doing something I loved, not quite sure how to do it yet.

While there, I made a meager living teaching a few students and playing as a “gun for hire” at various private events and for “The Real Doug Lane” (he’d be an excellent candidate to interview as well, his life story and talent as an artist are sure to interest readers.” I loved to play for crowds, but seeing the light in students’ eyes as they “got it” really made me feel fulfilled.

Upon graduation, I decided to quit playing gigs and focus on teaching full time, with a goal of changing the way music lessons are taught forever. While the teachers who work with me and I are far from making the full impact we’d love to, I do feel that we have figured out how to do things differently!

We have two objectives with every student: to help them fall in love with music and their instrument; and to help them make significant progress compared to traditional music lessons. Our courses are designed to help students make a year of regular progress in 12 weeks.

I also figured out a couples years ago the importance of the opportunity for students to show off these skills, and this is why we lose money to put on a concert that helps students feel like rockstars 4 times a year.

Since starting this in May ‘23, I have discovered a second love- entrepreneurship. It feels good to build something and make a difference in ways that are unique to me. It is much harder than other paths I could have chosen, but I believe it will be more rewarding for myself and others.

Most important to me, my family gives me the reason to do what I do. I can’t stress enough to other entrepreneurs out there the difference a positive, supportive spouse makes!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road for sure! There are quite a few entrepreneurs out there I follow, and it seems like they all have 1 thing in common- they sucked and made mistakes at one point!

This is true in teaching and as a player as well. I sounded terrible and took forever to learn starting out (pretty much til my 3rd year in college). Students got frustrated with my limited ability to show them the fastest, easiest way for them to learn something and quit in the beginning, I’ve made business mistakes that have made us wonder if we can keep going, but none of that is a bad thing!

To me, life is all about making mistakes and improving each day, because the best also happen to be those that make the most mistakes. One of those entrepreneurs I follow, Alex Hormozi talks about how the most worthwhile games to play in life have no end. To win is to keep playing, and that’s how I approach business, music, and family.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Oh man, this would be a huge list if I were to list them all!

I give credit to my parents for helping me dream, to the folks I look up to as teachers (Curt Gordon, Rich Dixon, Jamie Glaser), as business owners (Chet Gray, Heath Petersen).

Most important, to my wife Kate and my newborn son Ruger for pushing me to be the best I can be.
