Conversations with Jen Galaxy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Galaxy

Hi Jen , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always been in love with creating, and have been drawing since I could hold a pencil. I fell in love with oil painting in my late teens, but put away my paints when I had children in my 30s. 5 years ago was deeply missing painting in my life, so I purchased myself a watercolor set and quickly became obsessed and awed by them.
My friend asked me to paint her dogs. I loved it so much I then painted her friend’s dog and then their friend’s cat…. Until strangers started reaching out to me to paint their pets. So I kinda fell into my own pet painting portrait business.
I continued painting for myself and selling my originals and prints here and there.
When I left my Partner of 14 years and moved back home to SLC, I was panicking about how to manage as a single mom of 3 and work full time. My sister, whom is a full-time potter, pushed me into diving right into embracing full time artist status. It’s been a wild ride, and absolutely worth the challenge and satisfaction of becoming an entrepreneur.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Oh man… I think I’d describe it as maybe a smooth uphill hiking trail… which can get slippery in the rain/snow causing you to slide downward and getting covered in mud sometimes. 😅
Being an artist I probably live a little more free and wild than most. But, I find diving in and stretching myself far past my comfort zones has opened up so many opportunities and the support has always flowed in the times I’ve needed it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a painter, primarily watercolors. I’m passionate about animals, human expression, and nature. I love creating art that inspires joy, beauty, or just a wholesome chuckle. Watching someone walk by my booth and smile, gives me so much happiness.
I have a piece that I painted shortly after leaving a hard relationship of 14 years that was one of my favorites. It is an octopus, which symbolize transformation, overcoming challenging situations with creativity, and resourcefulness… It was an inspirational piece for myself at a time I was truly stepping back into myself.
I think what sets me apart from others would be that, like with all artists/creatives, my art is an extension of me which will always be unique to my experiences and perspectives.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
My optimism and love for this world and its inhabitants. It has dragged me out of bed on days I just want to be cozied up all day. It has help me find hope when all looks dark, and keeps me extending myself beyond my comfort zone.
