Today we’d like to introduce you to Noah Mattson
Hi Noah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My mom has always photographed my sporting events, so she had a lot of photography equipment. When in college in Indianapolis, IN, I took 2 trips out west and for both trips my mom let me borrow a camera and some lenses. I loved photographing the wildlife on these trips! Then, I got moved to Utah for work after graduating college. At this point, my mom let me have her old camera and a few lenses. Then, I really started putting time in with the wildlife. I started visiting many different places with dense wildlife: Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Southern Utah National Parks, Antelope Island State Park (my favorite local place- a real hidden gem), and other wildlife refuges. I began posting these photos on social media and people started asking for prints. So, I learned how to build a website and built it! Today, I continue to spend lots of time in the great outdoors, visiting the same places, and now I even try to sell some prints to cover the costs!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes, it has been pretty smooth. I was super blessed to have free equipment to start and have a great day job that has afforded me the ability to do these things. My only struggle is that I sleep in my car, a modest 2009 Ford Fusion while on most of my trips so that I can afford to spend more time traveling!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a photographer, specializing in wildlife photography in the rocky mountain range. I am known for my wildlife portraits. I am most proud of my ability to stay persistent in places where I know wildlife exists- even if I don’t find it on my first, second, or third try. Additionally, I think most photographers want things that make photos “technically” good- great clarity, sharpness, composition, etc. But, I really focus on unique art to me. I love when colors are popping at sunrise and sunset and you can commonly find me laying on the ground to create different foregrounds for my photos. I actually take less photos today then I used to because I am looking for unique situations that encompass the animal, its habitat, and my perspective.
