Daily Inspiration: Meet Rachel Ostler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Ostler

Hi Rachel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Sour Honey SLC was founded in the spring of 2024 in response to the amount of underrepresented creatives in art spaces in the Salt Lake valley. Headed by Erica Jursic, Frances Ngo, Janessa Ilada, and Rachel Ostler, we’ve set out to provide support and foster a sense of belonging among emerging and established BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ artists.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a smooth road so far – we are lucky and grateful to have had a great first year. Hitting the ground running, we were able to host community gatherings and a halloween art market. We’ve collaborated with local organizations, Under the Umbrella Bookstore and Burning Sissy Valley, hosting art workshops. We also created an interactive art piece for an art show hosted by Planned Parenthood Association of Utah that will be traveling through the state this year.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Sour Honey specializes in all things art, but we have really enjoyed creating opportunities for people to get creative. We’ve hosted collage workshops, a pressed flower suncatcher workshop, and an art night in the park, a museum day. We are especially proud of a large interactive weaving piece we created for Planned Parenthood.

It is magic seeing where people’s self-expression and imagination will take them when they have the space and support to slow down and play with art supplies.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
We foresee a need for more creative spaces as we enter current times of uncertainty, for people to share space in community and find ways to express their inner minds and develop their artistic voice. It feels more important than ever to provide accessible and safe inclusive spaces for marginalized and underrepresented folks.
