Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Ponce
Hi Cynthia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in a humble family, often wearing my older sisters’ clothes. From a young age, I found joy in creating—I used to play with my Barbies not just for fun, but because I loved designing and making clothes for them and their little families. I kept doing this until I was 14, unknowingly nurturing a deep passion for fashion design.
Life, however, led me down a different path. I pursued a career in marketing and worked in the commercial sector of tech and communications companies. While I excelled in this field, I always felt that something was missing. Fashion was more than just an interest—it was a calling. When I decided to embark on my journey to the U.S., I carefully laid the groundwork to finally dedicate myself to what truly
The pandemic became a turning point, allowing me to embrace a more conscious way of living. That’s when I discovered the magic of Peruvian Pima cotton and hand embroidery—the
At Yawar, we empower women. We help ambassador of two of Peru’s most exquisite fibers—Pima cotton and alpaca—sharing their beauty, heritage, and artistry with the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all—it has been a journey full of challenges, but each obstacle has shaped me and strengthened my vision. Moving to the U.S. and starting a business in a completely different market was daunting. I had to adapt quickly, learning not only about the industry but also about new consumer behaviors, logistics, and the legal aspects of running a brand in a foreign country.
One of the biggest struggles has been working remotely with artisans in Peru. Communication, production timelines, and quality control all require extra effort when you’re not physically present. There were moments of frustration, delays, and financial uncertainty, but I never lost sight of my mission.
Another challenge has been educating the market about the value of sustainable fashion and handcrafted pieces. In a world dominated by fast fashion, it takes time to build awareness and appreciation for artisanal work, but I believe in slow, meaningful growth.
Beyond the business challenges, this journey has also been deeply personal. Overcoming limiting beliefs, trusting in my creativity, and stepping into an industry that I once thought was out of reach has been a transformation of its own.
Despite the struggles, I wouldn’t change a thing. Every challenge has led me to where I am today—building a brand that not only creates beautiful garments but also empowers women and shares the richness of Peruvian culture with the world.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Yawar is a sustainable fashion brand that celebrates Peruvian craftsmanship through beautifully designed garments made from Pima cotton, alpaca, and handwoven textiles. We specialize in hand-embroidered and artisanal pieces, blending traditional techniques with contemporary, timeless designs. Each piece tells a story—of culture, heritage, and the skilled women artisans who bring them to life.
What sets us apart is our deep commitment to ethical fashion and women’s empowerment. We don’t just create clothing—we create opportunities. By working directly with Peruvian artisans, we provide fair wages and help women recognize their talent, gain financial independence, and break free from cycles of violence.
I am most proud of how Yawar has evolved from a dream into a movement. Our pieces are not just garments—they are wearable art, handcrafted with intention and meaning. We offer limited-edition collections that emphasize quality over quantity, embracing the concept of silent luxury, where craftsmanship and heritage take center stage.
For your readers, I want them to know that choosing Yawar means embracing conscious fashion—one that respects people, traditions, and the environment. Our collections range from elegant alpaca sweaters and woven vests to delicately embroidered Pima cotton pieces, all designed to be timeless, versatile, and meaningful. We invite you to be part of our journey, to wear something with a story, and to celebrate the beauty of handmade fashion.
