Conversations with Tessa Lopez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tessa Lopez

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
You could say my story started a good while ago, I was a young girl who always aspired for a better life. I knew from the beginning I wanted more. I came from a low income household. Growing up living pay check to pay check wasn’t exactly anyones dream lifestyle. I new that better things were coming, I’d just have to put in the hard work to get anywhere close to what people might call luck.

I had quite a few hobbies and the one that has always stuck is cosmetics. For me it was always just following my passion, my authenticity, my one love.

I never had any direction until I was around 15 years old then everything started to make sense. I knew what I loved, and was passionate about. I started in the field of makeup and beauty then continued to progress from there. Along the way I found a passion for lashes and brows.

Eventually I was brought upon an opportunity to get my license for cosmetology while I was a senior in high school. I started Mtech in 2019. Then in 2020 covid put things on a bit of a halt but I made it through and graduated. Then the following year, 2021 I had my Cosmetology License and Certification as an Eyelash Technician. I keep pushing everyday to build a clientele and have so many more aspirations, this is still just the beginning for One Love Cosmetics.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Quite the contrary. I don’t think following your dream is ever going to be a smooth road. Coming face to face with the discomfort and being able to recognize that it’s hard to stay where you’re at but it’s also hard to choose to be better everyday. Keep taking steps in the direction of improvement. Life will test you, over and over just to see how bad you truly want it.

I want to be honest. I believe that living in my truth I will find my people and hopefully someone out there can relate or maybe I can help inspire even one person that it’s never too late, and nothing is impossible.

I had to believe in myself, there were very few people that I can say truly supported me in my triumphs. I had to overcome my poor self-image, I believed everything negative that I thought about myself. I had to completely destroy my old self and build up a new self image that reflected the life I wanted.

One of my struggles was that I completely despised school. I never did fit in with any cliques. None of the teachers liked me. I never did understand since I kept my head down and tried to seek the least amount of attention possible. And maybe that’s exactly what they didn’t like. I felt very slow compared to average. I only showed up just enough to pass. So I was planning on graduating early but I needed to stay in high school to also receive college credit. Of course COVID affected everyone and made things insanely difficult.

College was just as hard as high school and I just needed my license first to attain any sort of certification for what I actually wanted to do. I never fit in when it came to school but if I can do it I know anyone else can.

Another challenge is that you will learn everything even something you’re not going to use in the future. So I got certified from my sister in-law who is so much more knowledgeable and had the skill and expertise to train me in just two days!

I didn’t learn anything about lashing from mtech. Even if I did take their program, it didn’t come close to the level of proficiency that I learned from my sis. The system has changed since then, but I don’t regret anything since now I have so many more skills and opportunity under my belt if I ever do want to switch things up. I finished in March of 2021 and began my search for a career immediately after.

Now to this day, I’ve learned so much in promoting myself, but there is still more to learn. I’m very reserved but it’s time for me to show everyone what I am capable of and I am so excited to be apart of this in hopes I can reach like minded people. Your true strength isn’t revealed when things are easy. It’s when you can keep getting up after being knocked down one after another. Do it tired, do it sad, do it unprepared! That is when you will see how truly powerful you are.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Licensed Cosmetologist and Certified Eyelash and Brow Technician. My specialty is lashes, but my journey started with brows and a love for makeup. Growing up, I experimented with different looks, from simple styles to full glam, constantly learning through trial and error.

Makeup was more than just a skill for me, it was an outlet. In a way, it was there when no one else was. At first, I used it to cover up my insecurities, especially my brows. Over time, though, it became a tool for self-love. I still have moments where I feel the need to go the extra mile to feel good about myself, but along the way, I realized something powerful: I am the canvas, and without me, my art wouldn’t exist.

That realization changed everything. Instead of using beauty to hide, I started using it to highlight my best features. And I wanted to help others do the same. I wanted to be that missing piece for someone else struggling with self-image to help them see the beauty in themselves that they might have overlooked.

Cosmetics became more than artistry; it became a way to connect with people. I wanted to truly see them, hear them, and create a space where they felt understood. Confidence isn’t just about looking good, it’s about feeling seen, valued, and empowered. If I can be the bridge that helps someone find that within themselves, then I know I am doing exactly what I was meant to do.

Any big plans?
My plans for the future revolve around growing in the beauty industry and turning my passion into something bigger. Right now, my focus is on perfecting my craft in lashes, semi-permanent makeup, brows, waxing, and tints so that, in the future, I can open my own studio. Whether I rent a space or create something from the ground up, I want it to be a reflection of me and my love for cosmetics.

I also dream of launching my own makeup brand, but with a different approach, one that prioritizes skin health. I want to create makeup that doesn’t just sit on the skin but actually benefits it, merging cosmetics with skincare so that it enhances your beauty while nourishing your skin. Eventually, I’d love to expand into a full skincare line with cleansers, toners, scrubs, and body washes, taking a more holistic approach to beauty. But for now, makeup is my passion, and that’s where I want to start.

Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with some high-profile clients through my husband’s work, and I’ve been asked to do makeup for an upcoming event in California. It’s an exciting step that could open a lot of doors, and I’m looking forward to seeing where this journey takes me. I know I’m exactly where I am supposed to be, and as long as I continue to hone my skills, I believe luck happens when preparation meets opportunity, and good things will follow.
