Conversations with Nicea Degering

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicea Degering

Nicea, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I studied Broadcast, Journalism at BYU and landed a job at ABC4 right after college. What started as a quick stop before I planned to move to a new city to launch my career, turned into a long stay in the state where I grew up. Over the last 29 years I’ve done everything from Crime Reporting, Weekend Anchoring, Morning Anchoring and now Co-Hosting of the Emmy award winning morning lifestyle show Good Things Utah. Along with my television work, I also appear on local and national commercials, radio ads, and emcee conventions, and charity events.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing in life is smooth! My journey has definitely had it’s ups and downs. Amazing interviews and tough ones. Opportunities I was awarded and positions and/or auditions that I didn’t get. Growing up on television and in front of a camera is exciting and daunting. I’ve aged on camera, made mistakes on camera and struggled to find who I was on camera. I started when social media didn’t exist and then has to work through a brand new world of immediate reaction and critique of not just my broadcast skills but what I wear and even how I parent.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am proud of the voice I have been in Utah for almost three decades. I love this state. I have been lucky to have a unique camera view of everything Utah for all of these years and the growth has been dramatic. I’ve seen my state host an Olympic games and now be poised to do it again. I’ve interviewed celebrities coming through Utah for the Sundance Film Festival. I’ve introduced viewers to new business owners that now have locations across the country. And I’ve interviewed everyday Utahns who just want to make a difference with everything from charity work to raising awareness for causes they are passionate about. I’ve personally had tough days at home, days where I didn’t want to get up and smile on morning tv – and without fail I have been inspired on that set every single time. I always loved my home state, but now I am more proud than I’ve ever been to call Utah home.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
How to define success evolves. If you asked me in my 20’s I would’ve said a spot on a national news program or Good Morning America. If you asked me in my 30’s and 40’s I would’ve tied my success to my children’s. If they were happy I was happy. Now in my 50’s I think success doesn’t have dramatic highs and lows, it’s peaceful. Success is knowing who you are and living authentically with whatever you are doing. It’s not chasing people’s opinion of you but trying your best to be comfortable in your own skin. I’m not perfect but I’m still growing and evolving – 30 years after I started.
