Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Zafra
Hi Dan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m Dan Zafra, a professional landscape and astrophotographer from Spain, living in the stunning desert Southwest of the U.S. My journey began with a love for travel and exploration, but it truly took off when I invested in my first digital camera after working at a multinational bank.
As I traveled the world, I discovered a passion for night photography, capturing the Milky Way and Northern Lights. This inspired me to co-found Capture the Atlas with my partner, Ascen, where we document our adventures and share photography knowledge through online content, workshops, and tours.
My work has been recognized by organizations like NASA and National Geographic, and I was honored to win the People’s Choice award at the 2022 Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. Ultimately, my journey from a corporate career to photography has taught me the importance of pursuing passions. I look forward to inspiring others to see the beauty of our world through their own lenses.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Transitioning from a conventional career to pursuing my passion for photography came with its own set of challenges.
Initially, I faced uncertainty about whether I could turn my love for photography into a sustainable career. The technical aspects of astrophotography, such as mastering advanced camera settings and post-processing, were daunting at first. There were times when I struggled to capture the images I envisioned, which tested my patience and determination.
Building a following and establishing my brand with Capture the Atlas also presented hurdles. It took time to develop a presence and create valuable content that resonated with others. Balancing the demands of running a business while maintaining my creative vision was another challenge.
However, each struggle has been a learning opportunity. Overcoming these obstacles has not only strengthened my skills but has also deepened my resolve to inspire others through photography. It’s all part of the journey, and I believe that the challenges make the successes even more rewarding.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in landscape and astrophotography, focusing on capturing the beauty of the natural world, particularly at night. My work often features breathtaking images of the Milky Way, Northern Lights, and stunning landscapes that showcase the interplay of light and nature. I’m known for blending artistic vision with technical expertise, using advanced camera technology and editing techniques to bring my creative ideas to life.
One of the aspects I’m most proud of is my ability to inspire others to explore their creativity through photography. I offer online tutorials, immersive photography tours, and workshops, helping individuals from various backgrounds enhance their skills and see the world from a different perspective. Additionally, my resources, like the Capture the Atlas Milky Way Calendars, assist thousands of photographers in planning their astrophotography shots each year.
What sets me apart from others is my commitment to sharing knowledge and fostering a community around photography. I not only focus on my work but also prioritize helping others unlock their potential. My journey has taught me the value of connecting with people, and I strive to make photography accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of their experience level. This combination of passion, expertise, and community-building is what truly defines my work and sets me apart in the field.
How do you define success?
I define success as the ability to pursue my passions while making a positive impact on others. For me, it’s not solely about accolades or financial gain, but rather about the connections I forge and the inspiration I provide through my work.
When I see someone unlock their creativity or achieve a breakthrough in their photography, I feel a deep sense of fulfillment. Success is also about continuous growth—learning from experiences, adapting to challenges, and pushing the boundaries of my craft. Ultimately, it’s about living authentically and sharing my love for photography with the world, all while encouraging others to do the same.
