Community Highlights: Meet Whitney Rasmussen of The Utah Mama

Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Rasmussen

Hi Whitney, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The Utah Mama actually stemmed, in part, from my divorce! From 2013-2020, I was living in Eagle Mountain. They had an amazing city citizens group as well as an active mom group. When I got divorced, I moved back home with my parents. They live in South Jordan. There was a city citizens group, but it wasn’t nearly as active, and I couldn’t find a mom group anywhere! My therapist suggested starting one and I did! It grew pretty quick and I made some great friends out of it. Later, my friend asked me to be a social media manager for her real estate business. My main task was finding events to email out to her contacts. It only lasted a few months, but my friends in the mom group would comment how I always seemed to know what was going on. In December of 2022, I decided to try to make a social media account sharing all of the fun things happening in Salt Lake & Utah Counties. And @theutahmama was born!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It mostly has! It has been very slow with growth, but I’m also not using it as a main source of income, so that’s alright. I mostly want to use it as a way to help families know fun things to do with their kids. It is so fun when people come up to me and recognize me from my page, but it is a little disheartening when I see the huge following that other Utah mom pages have and see how far I have to go.

We’ve been impressed with The Utah Mama, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The biggest thing that I do is share fun, family-friendly, mostly free events for families in the Salt Lake and Utah Valleys. There are a lot of other fabulous mom accounts that also show great parks, splash pads, hikes, events, etc, and I do that as well. Family-friendly fun is what I specialize in.

One thing that really sets me apart is that I post a list of events for every single day. It’s great for families who end up needing something to do for the day and can flip through the options. Weekdays generally have 30-50 options while weekends can get up to over 100!

Another thing that sets me apart is my lists. I make a list for Summer Camps, Halloween activities, and Christmas activities. They are on Google spreadsheets, so they aren’t the prettiest, but they are very searchable and include links, pricing information, etc.

I think that something I’m the most proud of is when people come to me and thank me for venues or events they’ve found from my account. I want your readers to know that if they have kids from 0-18 they should come give @theutahmama a follow (either on Facebook or Instagram)!

Fun fact – my full time job is a 2nd grade teacher! I also ghost write for a British chef on the side.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I admire people so much who are big risk takers! I’ve taken some risks when it comes to business. I’ve tried some MLMs and lost money (definitely not for me). With @theutahmama I’ve taken some financial risks with paying for advertising and that has paid off! I’d consider myself a light risk-taker. Especially where I have a family who depends on me, I tend to err on the side of caution.

Pricing:

  • Following me is 100% free, but I do want to share my discount code for the GETOUTPASS if possible! It’s my biggest source of income 😀
  • GetOutPass code THEUTAHMAMA will always give you the best discount out there. It’s always at least $5 better than the current website sale.
