Today we’d like to introduce you to April Hickman
Hi April, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in construction. My dad was a contractor. But I’ve always loved homes in general. As a kid I paid attention to the details of the homes of my friends and the homes in movies. I looked beyond the actors and story and was obsessed with the homes. This let me to design and build 2 of my own homes, devour magazines like Architectural Digest, Elle decor, house beautiful, etc. After I designed my last home friends acquaintances began to ask for my help. One thing led to another and I just kept getting bigger and better opportunities and here we are…
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle by far is setting up and managing the business end. Interior Design is a complex business and there is not a lot of guidance in this area. Even though I’ve got a good thing going and have come a long way, this is still a daily struggle.
We’ve been impressed with April Hickman Design, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a full service Design firm we specialize in high end residential homes mostly but have done a few commercial projects as well. We enjoy and feel it’s important to spend time getting to know our clients and pay close attention implementing their personal wants and needs into their project. We have a talented and well equipt team that not only is forward thinking about all things design but technically skilled as well. We have sketch up and auto CAD artist on our team that create 3D renderings that help our clients see the vision before it is executed. Our team is friendly and engaging. We are easy and fun to work with and I’m proud of what we have built.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I love all business podcast. Anything that let you in on what its really like to run a business helps validate what I go through as a business owner. The most helpful book I read is the E-Myth. It helped me understand setting up systems and processes.
