Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Miller
Hi Nathan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Mush Better Mushrooms was started by Samson Cline, my business partner.
It started in his dry wall repair business. He built a lab room and a grow room inside because he wanted to pursue his passion of mushrooms.
I traded sweat equity for 40% of MBM on January 22, 2024. With the help of my business partner Samson and my girlfriend Charity, Mush Better Mushrooms is on a roll to grow into something amazing.
I was a plumber before this adventure and was listening to a podcast that had a mycologist on as a guest speaker. He talked about amazing mushrooms that most people don’t know about. Mushrooms that are tasty, beautiful, can heal and so many more! And that’s what began my fascination of fungi!
On hand, we grow a variety of mushrooms, such as; beef steak, black pearl king trumpet, blue oysters, Chestnut, golden oysters, king trumpet, lions mane, maitake, pink oyster, and shiitake. We also sell Lions Mane tinctures (which is amazing for brain health) and grow kits of all our mushrooms. Soon, we will also have an oyster tincture for heart health, and a mix of our mushrooms for body health.
We have been selling our mushrooms at our shop in American Fork, but we have had the most success at farmers markets like; Provo Farmers Market, Highland, and the Bohemian Bum Market as well!
This 2025 summer season we aim to be at Provo, Orem, Lindon, Springville and Draper Farmers Market’s.
We are also happy to be selling our mushrooms and tinctures at Oliver’s Place and Snuck Farm in Pleasant Grove.
I have been growing mushrooms for 5 years learning through trial and error, talking to others, and books.
All of this brings us to our topic today, MushBetter Market. Our market is held every Sunday in our shop, located at 724 E 50 S, American Fork Utah.
It started out being a morning market, but we have decided to try to switch it to the afternoon. Since we are brand new, we are trying to find the best time that will give us the most traction for our vendors.
The reason why we started this is because we wanted to be able to help other small businesses grow while we grow ours. The community we are building is my most favorite part of this entire journey.
We wanted to start up a safe place for vendors to sell their goods for free. A lot of farmers markets charge an arm and a leg for a booth spot. We wanted to help people make more than just their booth fee a day and keep all of their earnings.
In the future, I hope to keep growing MushBetter Market. I hope it keeps thriving. A goal of mine is to get big enough to rent Art Dye park and have a big farmers market during the summer. Hopefully it happens, but if not, we will still love to hold our little markets every Sunday from 10am-2pm
Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram! Hope to see you soon 🍄
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’ve definitely had bumps in the road.
We had to pull our lions mane tinctures, a top selling item, from the shelves of our own store because we didn’t have a proper kitchen to make the tinctures in.
Thanks to Oliver’s Place in Pleasant Grove, we are able to make our tinctures in their kitchen and get this amazing product to people who need it!
We have had contamination once or twice, but it’s easy to spot and take care of once you know what you’re looking for.
For our first 4 markets no one showed up, and that can be discouraging. But by sticking to our plan and gaining more vendors we had a great turn out of vendors and customers.
We’ve been impressed with Mush Better Mushrooms , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We love mushrooms!
This company was built on the love and appreciation for mushrooms.
We specialize in the growing and selling mushrooms. We also specialize in making it inexpensive and easy to grow your own beautiful gourmet mushrooms!
We are proud we make products that actually work and make a difference and we are proud to not break the bank to eat healthy or get a tincture that isn’t snake oil.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
