Meet Jasmine Roth of Park City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Roth

Hi Jasmine, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My start in the home industry was completely by accident. I was living in Southern California, working in a corporate job (think a business suit and high heels everyday) and my husband and I thought we could hire a builder to manage building our own house and an investment project on the side. The project was much bigger than we expected and two years in, I decided to leave my job and help finish our project. I always joke that I never went back to “work”. From the minute I stepped foot on our construction site, I started learning. I loved it and I was hooked! I learned and learned (I’m still learning) and started taking on design clients for free as I got my feet under me. Eventually my skills allowed me to charge my clients and the rest is history. I kept building houses, taking on interesting projects, and eventually HGTV came knocking. Now I’ve had my own HGTV show for 6 Seasons, I’ve had my own residential development company for over 12 years, and most recently our family decided we were ready for a change and moved to Utah full time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been anything but a smooth road. I’m not sure if you’ve ever done a home renovation, but the only thing that’s predictable in my industry is that anything that can go wrong, will in fact go wrong. Each day in home building is a challenge. I tell my team all the time, “If this was easy, everyone would be doing it”. But it’s not easy and we have to have a very special skillset to survive in this tricky industry.

Also being a business owner has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever taken on. The learning curve is steep and just when you think you have it figured out, something changes that puts you back to square one. I’ve failed more times than I’m willing to admit, trying things that I thought would pan out but eventually didn’t. That moment when you have to throw in the towel and admit it isn’t working is the hardest part about owning a business. But those moments have always led to bigger opportunities – so I can’t completely write them off. The other thing that people warn you about but you can’t understand until you’re actually in it, is the amount of time that “running a business” actually takes. Most people think if they could just own their own company, they could follow their dreams and spend their time doing what they’re passionate about. But I’m here to tell you first hand, that’s rarely the case. Your time, especially in the beginning, is spent trying to figure out your business structure, your taxes, hiring your team, building your social media, etc. It took me a while to realized that more than half of my time was going to go towards these less-than-sexy activities and it was very frustrating in the beginning.

And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention my most recent challenge. My husband Brett and I have been together for 20 years, but only recently decided to have children. It’s been a wild ride trying to juggle business ownership, a tv show, and being a mom. Becoming a mom has been the most tranformative time in my life. A challenge unlike any other I’ve taken on. Now, a mom of two little girls, I wouldn’t have it any other way. But that’s not to say it’s easy! Each day I have to remind myself to just do my best and inevitably chances are someone will still be left hanging because there’s only so much time in a day. So I would say that learning that I can’t be everything to everyone has been my biggest challenge yet.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known for living in the moment. I love the idea of exploring what “home” means to different people. I believe that our homes should be comfortable, easy to maintain, and look beautiful – a true representation of ourselves! I love helping people feel comfortable in their homes.

My design style has been “California Casual” for as long as I can remember. That is, until I started designing in Utah. I’ve loved the challenge of incorporating the natural landscape of Utah, the changing seasons, and the “mountain vibes” into my newest designs. Now when asked, my aesthetic is much more subdued. A nod toward the dramatic mountains that surround our little city. I love neutrals, and a subtle pop of color here and there. I’m currently exploring more simplistic palettes and learning to use more restraint. I’m so excited about my most recent designs and feel more inspired than ever.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I like measured risk. On the face, it might seem like I’m a big risk taker, but in reality I’m big on research, numbers, and a good old fashioned plan. In my opinion the biggest risk you can take is to jump into something without a plan. I see my clients do it all the time and we all know how that ends up! I love a good list and would argue that organization is the key to success. It’s not the answer that most people want to hear (it takes time, dedication, and commitment to plan) but in my opinion it’s the key to success.
