Conversations with Sheena Bates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheena Bates

Hi Sheena, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I studied photography at Utah Valley University. While there we interviewed a fashion photographer. One thing she said really struck me. She said to find what you love, aside from photography and find a way to combine the two. Right away I knew that mine was food. At the time I didn’t really know that food photography was a thing, but I knew that those were the two subjects that I wanted to combine.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road. Shortly after I graduated, my husband, son and I moved to London for my husband’s graduate school. With that big of a move, and the fact that we weren’t planning on living there long term, I didn’t feel it made much sense to pursue clients.

My husband and I have three children, and I have tricky pregnancies, so during those times I significantly cut back on marketing and taking on clients.

There were times along the way that I felt like giving up. Freelancing is not for the faint of heart; you have to really be self motivated and consistent. I’m so glad that I have kept with it because I have had so many rewarding experiences along the way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a food, beverage and product photographer. I specialize in bright, bold and vibrant photos that make the product pop. I love seeing my client’s reactions to the work I create for them and am so proud when they report back to me about how my photography has benefited them and helped their business to grow.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t know that I would attribute luck to my successes or failures. I would say that God has placed certain directions in my path and has motivated me to continue to press on when I have felt low during slow times.
