Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Lund
Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
This has been an aspiration of ours for years. We were on vacation, reminiscing that it would be incredible to own our own home goods shop someday, a place for unique and thoughtful items for the home while making it accessible to people with more affordable options. As time went on, Felipe started to become interested in plants: growing, collecting, all the things. It was obvious that we needed to combine both these ideas into one place with goods to make your space beautiful. When I had the opportunity to relocate to Salt Lake City for work, it became the perfect opportunity to take a leap and start MOTHER plants + goods. The SLC community has been an incredible place to have our shop, we have receved an immense amount of kindness and support from the people that we have met here.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The desire was always there but as life presents itself, there is never a perfect time to make a HUGE life change. For me, getting over the fear of uncertainty was a challenge, once it settled in, we never looked back!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a plant and home goods shop located inside Church & State. The plant offerings are at the heart of what we do: Cactus, Succulents, andTropicals, including hoys and syngoniums. We have plants that meet every price point but we specialize in rare plants that are hard to find or that you cant find any where else locally. In addition, it is important to offer everything that one needs to grow and maintain happy, thriving plants. We offer tips and tricks, soils and nutrients. Pots and lights are on the way!
For our home goods, each item is well thought out from gorgeous wood tools for the kitchen, unique decorative items and home fragrance for a full service offering to create a cozy home.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I feel like we are just starting out, I am not sure if there is a time that will exist when I won’t! My 2 pieces of advice, is first, do your due diligence in understanding ALL that you need to start a business: taxes, licenses, business account, etc. It takes a lot of work and there are many steps but its worth it. Second, always believe that you have something that no one else has, your idea is unique to you and your people will find you!
