Conversations with Brittany Hansen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Hansen

Hi Brittany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been drawn to stories, whether reading or writing them. About 6 years ago I decided to seriously pursue being an author and cultivating my skills as a writer. I began attending seminars, workshops, and surrounding myself with other writers. I’ve been fortunate enough get mentoring from some amazing authors who I want to emulate. The biggest things is that I just keep throwing my hat in the ring, so to speak, and putting words on the page.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Oh, there have for sure been struggles. There’s a steep learning curve with self-publishing, so you have to expect moments when you mess up or feel stuck. I misunderstood a question on the backend of setting up my debut novel for distribution and by the time I caught it there were already a few hundred preorders placed. I only made about 7 cents a book on those since it couldn’t be fixed retroactively. I was really disheartened and embarrassed, as if I should’ve known how to do everything the first time, which isn’t a realistic expectation. Honestly, I think that’s the biggest obstacle: self-doubt and imposter syndrome. I don’t think anyone escapes it. It’s learning how to interrupt your own unhelpful thoughts and doing the thing anyway.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a fantasy author. I have a contemporary fantasy out called The Abandoned Realm. It’s a standalone, about an Elven warrior who gets pulled from her world and dropped in the Abandoned Realm when her author stops writing the story. When a portal is opened to the real world, she and her author have to try to work together to reverse the damage and save the city from angry, discarded characters. It’s fast-paced, high stakes, action-packed, with a sprinkle of romance.

I’m currently working on a duology. Book one is called The Outlaw Witch of Sherwood (coming October 2025). It’s a witchy gender-bent, reimagining of Robin Hood where blood magic is seeping into Sherwood Forest. There’s a large romance plot with enemies-to-lovers. Honestly, I’ve been having so much fun writing it and can’t wait to share it with the world.

I think all my stories have a lot of themes about believing in your own power, healing from the past, and loving yourself. Just with dragons and magic to make it more fun.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was super chatty and outgoing. I was always reading. I got caught several times in class trying to read under my desk during lessons, which was mortifying for someone with an aversion to being in trouble. I did theater and choir throughout school, besides contending with five siblings for attention. It definitely gave me a solid foundation for being extroverted, which has been helpful when I do author events and social media. I will say as I’ve gotten older, I’ve enjoyed cultivating the introverted side of myself.
