Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Thompson.
Hi Jessica , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was adopted when I was four years old, after being removed from my biological mother at seven months and placed into foster care. Growing up, I was surrounded by social workers and quickly came to know the kind of big-hearted people they are. My caseworker—I’ll never forget her name, Rosemary—brought my twin sister and me to our adoptive parents’ home on April Fools’ Day, 1992. It was no joke, but a beautiful reality: this was the family we were meant to be in.
As a teenager, I went to therapy to work through OCD and the typical growing pains of adolescence. That experience left a lasting imprint on me—my therapist helped me feel seen, capable, and safe in my own skin. I also spent time doing humanitarian work in Mexico, San Francisco, and Oakland, which expanded my love for serving others and deepened my desire to make an impact.
When it came time to choose a career, social work felt like the most natural path. It was familiar, meaningful, and rooted in everything that shaped me. After earning my degree, I planned to start a family—but I kept feeling this annoying little nudge to go back to school for my MSW. I’m so glad I listened. That decision gave me the opportunity to become a therapist and raise my family around work I love.
After years in group practice, I took a leap of faith and opened Intuitively Well Therapy, serving women across Utah. Starting this business has been a full-circle moment of healing—from my own early beginnings in foster care to now creating a space where I support others with a big heart, on my own terms.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road. Think bumps, fender benders, running out of gas, blowing the transmission… and eventually buying a whole new car. The journey has been challenging, humbling, and at times messy—but it’s also been incredibly worth it.
If I hadn’t struggled as a teenager, I wouldn’t fully understand how life-changing a good therapist can be. If I hadn’t experienced a traumatic birth, a miscarriage, or the push-and-pull of being a working mom, I wouldn’t grasp the emotional depth of what so many mothers carry. And if I hadn’t taken a leap of faith to bet on myself, I wouldn’t know just how complex, stretching, and sacred it is to build something from the ground up while raising a family.
Every hard moment has shaped the way I show up—for my clients, for my work, and for myself. The road hasn’t been smooth, but it’s led me exactly where I’m meant to be.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a perinatal mental health therapist and certified doula, and I specialize in walking with women through the deeply transformative seasons of pregnancy, postpartum, birth recovery, loss, and the evolving identity of motherhood. Through Intuitively Well Therapy, I offer individual therapy (both in-person and online across Utah), focusing on trauma, grief, perinatal mental health, sexual health, and helping women rediscover their sense of self in the midst of caregiving, transition, and healing.
I’m known for creating space where women can feel deeply seen—without judgment or pressure to “bounce back” or have it all figured out. I integrate EMDR, expressive arts, and IFS-informed approaches in a way that feels grounded, creative, and collaborative. I also lead monthly birth trauma groups for women looking to process their stories in community.
Alongside that, I run Empowered and Rising, where I offer one-on-one birth consulting and postpartum planning services for families who want to prepare emotionally, mentally, and intuitively for their experience. I also train other birth workers and therapists on how to integrate mental health-informed practices into their own work.
What sets me apart? I bring both lived experience and clinical expertise into the room. I’ve been the client. I’ve been the mother navigating trauma, identity shifts, and the wild vulnerability of parenthood. I don’t hide behind perfection—I meet people where they are, with honesty, humor, and heart.
What I’m most proud of is hearing from a client, “You helped me feel like myself again.” That’s the goal. That’s the work. Not just surviving these seasons, but becoming more whole because of them.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5 to 10 years, I see the worlds of therapy and birth work becoming more integrated, community-centered, and emotionally attuned. I think people are craving more than just one-on-one support—they’re looking for spaces where healing, learning, and connection can happen together.
For my therapy practice, I hope to expand group offerings focused on healing birth trauma and building community support for women in the postpartum season. I’m also working toward creating a therapeutic journal or workbook for conscious parents navigating grief, loss, or emotional overwhelm. Eventually, I’d love to host retreats for pregnant women—spaces where they can connect with their bodies, work through birth fears, and cultivate deep self-trust before they enter motherhood.
With Empowered and Rising, my vision is to create an accessible online class for expecting parents—something that combines practical tools with emotional preparation for both birth and postpartum. I want people to feel informed, empowered, and connected to their intuition—not just checking boxes on a birth plan.
The big shift I’m noticing—and leaning into—is that more people want care that honors the whole experience: mind, body, heart, and community. I’m excited to be part of that movement.
