Check Out Michael Kunde’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Kunde.

Hi Michael , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As far as having an established nationwide and global career as a commercial photographer goes, my story started a little later than most. I didn’t even pick up a camera until 2007, when I was 21 years old. I decided to take a Photo 101 class at my local community college just to learn how to use this weird black box with a lens attached to it. A few short weeks later, I was hooked. It was all I thought about, all I focused on. I ended up taking as many photo classes as I could for about a year and a half until I got the opportunity to work with a local commercial photographer. He hired me for a handful of gigs, and that’s when everything changed. I dropped out of college, started learning the inner workings of the industry, and knew right then and there—this was what I wanted to do. The next seven years were a whirlwind of assisting photographers from all over the country. I spent more than 150 days a year on location in some of the most remote parts of the world. It was nothing short of a dream come true. That hands-on experience set me up for success when I finally took the leap and started my own photography business. In 2014, I officially stopped assisting and launched my career as a commercial photographer and director. Now, 11 years in, I’ve had the privilege of working with brands and clients I could have only dreamed of back in college. This industry is always evolving, and I’ve worked tirelessly to stay relevant and competitive in this ever-changing market. At the end of the day, all I want to do is create compelling images and stories that fuel my passion while bringing my clients’ visions to life.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think anytime you decide to go into business for yourself—when you decide to truly believe in yourself—it’s nothing short of terrifying. I have nothing but love and admiration for anyone who takes that leap. It’s definitely not always a smooth road. As many would say, “The struggle is real.”

As creatives, we’re defined by the vision inside our heads. Putting yourself out there—sharing your work with the world—can be both scary and vulnerable. You hope that someone, or some brand, connects with that vision enough to trust you with their creative process (and a significant budget) to bring it to life.

In this business, photographers can go days, weeks, and unfortunately, sometimes months without work. When the jobs slow down and the paychecks stop coming in, it can really mess with your head. That’s why it’s so important to keep a level head, maintain mental clarity, and continue creating—even when no one is paying you to. Shooting for fun, doing test shoots, and diving into photo books always help me stay inspired during those slower times.

Ultimately, the slow times do end. And when they do, I think it’s crucial to be creatively ready—to be prepared to dive headfirst into the next commissioned project with fresh energy and a renewed perspective.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m Michael Kunde—a photographer with a passion for creating powerful imagery and just enough business sense to keep the lights on. The clients and agencies I work with know they can count on me—not just to deliver killer shots, but to be a solid creative partner who helps bring their vision to life without the drama.

I specialize in shooting on location, which means I spend a good chunk of my time living out of a suitcase and collecting airline miles. My work spans a range of industries—travel, tourism, agriculture, adventure, and hospitality. Some of the brands I’ve had the pleasure of working with include:

Adobe
Meta
Delta Airlines
Marriott
The North Face
Fjällräven
Shell
Chevrolet
Utah Tourism
Bayer
Omni Hotels

The common theme with all these clients and the type of photography services I offer is…. Location, location, location. About 90% of the time, my job starts with hopping on a plane, tracking down the best local coffee, and then getting to work.

Beyond the actual really fun part of my job, “pressing the little button on top of the camera”… I pride myself on being a problem solver and collaborating with others who I consider the best in the business. Things don’t always go as planned on set—weather, logistics, the occasional wild animal cameo—but I thrive on figuring it out and keeping things moving with the best team of producers, editors, DPs, and designers to make sure every project is dialed in and the client is happy.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Beyond the business, I’ve got a love for people, travel, and connecting with the world through my lens. Street photography is my creative playground—it helps me see places differently and stay inspired. I make it a point to travel somewhere kind of remote or off the beaten path each year. It’s a complete reset for me and helps me feel excited, curious and rejuvenated with my work. Last years random remote travel adventure was a 2 week long road trip throughout the vast Transylvania region of Romania. AND, yes…. I did visit Draculas Castle. When I’m not working, you’ll find me chatting with new faces, enjoying live music, sipping coffee, or relaxing with a cold, cheap beer. Oh, and my home life? Boris and Brasky, my two giant Maine Coon cats that stomp around my house demanding attention and affection 24/7.
