Today we’d like to introduce you to Lighthouse Logic.
Hi Lighthouse, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Lighthouse Logic began in 2019 when we were students at Southern Utah University. I (David) was a singer eager to start a band, so I began by searching for a drummer. I met Aubrey in one of my classes, and she told me she played drums. Our lineup quickly grew to include two guitarists and a bassist, and we started rehearsing in a middle school band room.
In the early days of the band, Aubrey and I also started dating—a relationship that likely helped keep the band together when the pandemic hit soon after we formed. We went through several lineup changes and even experimented with different band names before settling on “Lighthouse Logic.” The name is a tribute to a Cedar City landmark—the lighthouse next to I-15 and Wal-Mart—and was inspired by a bandmate I had in high school.
As time went on, Aubrey transitioned from drummer to lead singer and frontwoman, while I shifted my focus to guitar. We began performing regularly on the Southern Utah music scene, participating in multiple Battle of the Bands competitions, playing at the local farmers market, and joining the “SokHop” concert series for multiple performances. In 2023, we made the move to Salt Lake City to expand our reach and tap into the city’s vibrant music scene. Since the move, we’ve had the chance to perform at venues such as Urban Lounge, The Rise, The Social, and Platinum Memorabilia. We’re also excited to have upcoming shows at Velour and The Boardwalk.
In addition to live shows, we’ve had the privilege of working with talented producers, musicians, and studios. We’ve collaborated with local bands like Down River and Hockey House, sharing our music on our YouTube channel.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the struggles we’ve had has been keeping a steady lineup. We two have been consistent through the entire 5 years of the band’s existence, but we’ve gone through 6 drummers, 5 guitarists, 4 bassists, and 3 singers, not including hired gun musicians along the way. That has really hindered our ability to perform live as regularly as we would like, slowing down our progress.
Starting the band at the end of 2019 also meant we were immediately hit by the pandemic, which severely limited our opportunities for live performances and networking during the crucial early years of our formation. The lockdowns and restrictions forced us to adapt quickly and find new ways to connect with our audience, but it was a tough time for a new band trying to build momentum.
Both of us also had other career aspirations at first, which kept us from giving as much attention to pursuing music. There were also pressures and compelling arguments to stay in those career paths rather than diverting to a more risky path like becoming professional musicians. Aubrey has years of work experience in the mental health field, and had opportunities left and right to grow in that career. I was planning to go to law school, and even had one law school offer me a full ride scholarship. There were significant pressures to stay in those stable, promising fields rather than take the leap into the uncertain world of professional music. Making the decision to go all-in on music wasn’t easy, but ultimately, we chose to pursue our passion, despite the risks.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in “punk conscious power pop.” We combine catchy, memorable vocal melodies with edgy, distorted guitar tones to create a unique musical experience. Our specialty is the vocal production in our songwriting. Aubrey spends hours creating intricate vocal parts, layering them together until it sounds like the heavens themselves are opening to receive you. It’s super cool stuff!
About a year ago, we decided to re-record our entire discography for a more polished, professional sound. The songs we had released until that point were recorded at home, and you can hear the learning pains along the way. To fix that, we took all our songs down and started working towards re-producing them into songs that better fit who we currently are as artists. We are super proud of the results, and can’t wait to share them with our fans, old and new!
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Shout out to Carvel Allen and Ethan Young, who started what is now SokHop in Cedar City. SokHop is a weekly concert series run by students of SUU. The vibes are always spot on, and the crowd that comes never fails to impress. It allowed us to experiment with our live performances in front of an audience who was game for anything, and prepared us for opportunities in larger venues.
Dr. McKay Tebbs at SUU also deserves a lot of credit for helping Aubrey during her time in the music program at SUU. His songwriting class especially was a huge contributor in Aubrey becoming the songwriter she is today.
We also need to thank: Joe Cassler for his excellent production work on many of our new songs. His help recording and producing our song When You Were In Spain put us on a great path; Dan at Rocket Skates Recording for his work on Distracted, which is our most popular song to date; TomiLee for his help in mixing and mastering about half of the songs on our debut album. His mixes are fabulous, and he’s so quick and responsive to our feedback.
