Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellie Wilson.
Hi Ellie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always been an artist. I think a lot of people sort of grow out of it as the get older, but I never did. My subject matter has changes from princesses, to donuts, to portraits, and finally to Landscapes and that’s where I’ve stuck. Growing up I was always drawing and I had amazing teachers through my years in public school who were very influential to me. I also had a grandpa who was a hobbyist landscape painter, and I used to sneak up into his art studio with my siblings and try and scare him while he was painting (he always saw us coming, but played along).
In Junior High and High School I decided I really wanted to pursue doing art for my profession. So I applied to different programs and got excepted into the BYU illustration program right out of High School. It gave me a head start into my degree, and as a result, into my career. When I graduated from the BFA program I sold out of my senior exhibition and launched into my career. Through different shows and competitions I have won over 20 awards and am now represented by 4 galleries. I moved around the world, but settled back here in Utah with my family. I have two daughters, and it is so fun to witness the world through their eyes.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think with any creative career there is a lot of doubt and second guessing that goes into your work. It is a constant battle, trying to get out of your head and free yourself up to make something beautiful. I was really worried about having kids and how that would effect my career, and it has, but not nearly as much as I was worried it would. I’ve learned though all of the moves and kids that you can adapt and always find a way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a artist. I work in Oil primarily doing landscape painting. I am well know for my plein air work. I have won many plein air competitions and I love the challenge of trying to capture a moment before the light shifts. It’s like a crazy race! One of my friends once jokingly called me the “fastest brush in the west”. It was a good laugh. Capturing the spirit of a moment is important to me. Getting the light and the grandeur. This world around us is spectacular. I am so glad to be in Utah with the diversity of landscape. It never gets old.
How do you think about happiness?
My family, My work, and cake.
The relationships and love that I share with my family is everything. I don’t think I can explain the “why” in words.
I love my job. Being outside with a brush in my hand. What could be better! Hiking to a mountain lake 6 miles away, taking a dip, doing a couple paintings. That is my ideal day.
If I am stressed and can’t get the paint on the canvas the way I want, it’s time to bake a cake (or any dessert) and resist the urge to eat it all.
