Community Highlights: Meet Amelia Larson of A Life For Seniors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amelia Larson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, my grandpa was paralyzed. My family spent a lot of time volunteering in skilled nursing communities, but it wasn’t until my grandma had a stroke that I became interested in changing the industry.

I started my career as a server in an assisted living and worked my way up to running them. After years of doing that, I saw the need to help families understand the senior living world.

The process and change can be so overwhelming, so A Life for Seniors was created. I wanted to help families understand their options and navigate the experience with an expert who understands what to look for and what to ask! The model is a no cost service to families! I love doing what I do, and am excited to continue serving families.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wish! Covid was a really challenging time for us, as less people were wanting to move. We also have had the challenge of more competition coming into the space with lower ethics bars, which has made it challegning to keep people doing the right things for the right reasons. We have also expanded into Texas, Ohio, and Missouri which all have challenges of getting established in new markets!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
A Life for Seniors. We are your local, no cost, experienced resource to help find you the best senior living
community based on your needs, budgets and preferences. We work with the senior living communities to
help people find the right place for them.
We have been around for almost 7 years. After running assisted living and memory care communities and
seeing the burden on families, we wanted to be a resource in helping people find the right place and be
educated on their options. We wanted people to not feel overwhelmed and to feel supported during this
transition in life.
My passion for senior living began as a child, my grandpa was paralyzed so we spent a lot of time with
home health and in and out of rehab stays, that inspired a lot of volunteering in skilled nursing
communities. My first job was as a server in an assisted living community. I was studying speech pathology
in college, when my grandma had a stroke, she went to a skilled nursing community in California and had a
really negative experience. That is when I decided I wanted to make a change in those communities. I
switched my schooling to an undergrad in healthcare admin and did my masters in gerontology. From
there I started working different levels throughout the communities, activities, marketing and then ran them
for a few years before I started A Life for Seniors.

Brand wise I am really proud that we are a free resource to families that operates as a boutique placement service. We are ethical, and do things for the right reasons. Also we didnt just buy a franchise and come in with no experience, we have years and years of experience and education in the industry.

How do you think about luck?
I would say you have to be ready for the opportunity so when luck comes into play you can actually do something with it.
