Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Alexander.
Hi Jasmine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hailing from Seattle, Washington, I’ve been an artist as long as I can remember: starting as an actress at 4 years old, fashion designer and singer at 5, writer at 6, photographer and filmmaker at 8, editor and screenwriter at 13, illustrator at 14, and model at 16. I have two published novels on Amazon, several of the independent films I’ve been in online, and just launched my first fashion line. I’ve lived in 11 of the 50 United States, where I’ve checked off having been to 25 of them as well as 7 countries so far, and through many circumstances, have moved a total of 45 times at the time of writing. I’ve hit rock bottom more times than I’d like to count, but it’s just proven my grit and determination. I’m a survivor of near-terminal pneumonia as well as a micro-brain aneurysm. I’ve been nearly homeless a few times, starved more than I’ve had food readily available, and been broke the most of my life (even grew up abjectly poor). Yet, here I am: alive, happy, with a positive outlook on life, and the drive to keep going. Through my trials, tribulations and the ilk I have grown into the person I am today, where my compassion and empathy for others has amplified exponentially due to my experiences and hardships, but I was no longer feeling whole myself. Finally, after I had had enough, I sat down and did extensive research on all 50 states and that is when I decided Utah was going to be my forever home. I’ve been here 3 years now, and since day 1 I said “I’m home;” the last time I felt at home was before all of the moving as a young child. I’ve since booked better acting work coming to Utah, have had some of the best opportunities come my way, amazing experiences, and, miraculously, fully healed my brain to the point there is zero trace I ever had an aneurysm! Because of this move for me—my soul—I’ve also branched out to contacts in Helsinki, Finland to continue my artistic endeavors!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, as I said in the previous section: having moved to 11 states, moved 45 times total within those states, having hit rock bottom several times, nearly being homeless, starved more than I’ve had consistent meals, grew up abjectly poor so some of the false data about money I learned from my parents followed me into my young adult years, have had my heart broken quite severely one too many times, physically abused a few times, survived near-terminal pneumonia and having had a micro brain-aneurysm, had been threatened to be thrown in jail because I refused to date one of my ex-ROOMMATES, survived major narcissistic mental abuse, and my name dragged through town twice by people who also wronged me. Oh, there is probably more, but this should do for now.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I rightfully call myself a renaissance artist because I do so many art forms. I’m first and foremost an actress, then an author second as I have written 65+ scripts to date and have 2 published novels on Amazon, then a fashion designer third for I finally—after so many years—just launched my first fashion line—starting with shoes. Then filmmaking, singing/songwriting/music, dancing, illustrating, photography and modeling follow after. I am a lover of art, so if I’m not doing one, I’m constantly doing another.
My best works thus far would have to be my novels, and my acting work; the former is 2 of 4 books (a saga), and I’ve gotten awards for some of the independent films I’ve acted in.
As far as what sets me apart, I create and share art to help educate, enlighten or entertain and do so from the love I have for and the want to help my fellow Man. I really want to see the next artistic renaissance in my lifetime, so I strive to do what I can. Almost everything I do, I do to help not only myself reach higher heights—be it physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually—but those around me; if just by putting a smile on someone’s face was all that person needed that day, then I know I’ve done my job.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Honestly, I don’t believe in luck, for on the outside to everyone else it looks like luck, but upon closer inspection, it’s: preparation meeting opportunity. If I haven’t done the work, how can I reap the rewards? So for me, when things aren’t going well (what others would call bad luck), I always take a step back and ask myself, “Okay, Jaz, what are you doing that you shouldn’t be, or what are you NOT doing that you should?” and from there I’m able to fine-tune and tweak things until I start seeing and getting traction again. Same goes for “luck:” I look closely to see WHAT caused the increase in good fortune and REPEAT IT. It’s really an applied science in actual fact.
