Rising Stars: Meet Detzany of Salt Lake City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Detzany.

Hi Detzany, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a vibrant, creative household where expression was everything—and for me, singing became my first language. As a Mexican-American navigating two cultures and two languages, music was the bridge that helped me connect with the world when words fell short.

My mom has always been my #1 supporter and anchor. She was the first to recognize my voice and put me in vocal lessons as a child. Her belief in me gave me the foundation to study music throughout high school and college, shaping me into the storytelling artist I am today.

Going to concerts as a kid lit a fire in me. I remember watching the stage and knowing deep down—I wasn’t meant to just be in the crowd. I wanted to move people the way music had moved me.

Music became my way to channel that strength. Through my songs, I tap into the divine feminine and share emotional truth to uplift others, especially women navigating identity, heartache, and rebirth.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped the artist and woman I am today. I’ve faced deep grief from a young age—losing loved ones, including my sister, made me painfully aware of how fragile life is. That kind of loss changes you. It taught me resilience, but also gave my music emotional depth and purpose.

I’ve also carried the weight of generational heartbreak—stories of pain passed down through the women in my family—and I’ve experienced my own heartbreak and divorce along the way. Navigating identity as a Mexican-American woman in the music industry has also come with its own set of challenges, especially when your voice doesn’t always fit into a box.

But through it all, I’ve chosen to turn pain into power. I’ve learned to channel those struggles into my art, using music as a form of healing—not just for me, but for others. The road has been anything but easy, but it’s led me to a place of purpose, authenticity, and connection.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m Detzany, a Mexican-American singer, songwriter, and producer who specializes in creating soul-stirring Latin-R&B soundscapes rooted in personal storytelling. My music transforms my own experiences—especially those of resilience, identity, and healing—into cinematic, emotionally rich songs that empower Mexican-American girls and women to embrace their voices and honor their divine feminine.

What sets me apart is my commitment to authenticity and vulnerability, blending cultural pride with fearless creativity to create a safe space for healing and bold self-expression. I’m most proud of reconnecting with and celebrating my Mexican heritage through my art, using music not only to tell my story but to uplift and inspire others navigating similar journeys.

Ultimately, my work is about turning pain into power, and helping others find strength and beauty in their own voices and stories.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I draw a lot of inspiration and guidance from a few key resources that help me stay creative and grounded both in life and work. One of my favorite podcasts is Broken Record by Rick Rubin—I love his perspective on music and creativity, especially how he helps artists get unstuck and reconnect with their vision. I also listen to The Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra, which keeps me centered and reminds me to align my work with deeper purpose.

Interviews with Zane Lowe are another favorite because he dives deep into the meaning behind artists’ music and stories, which really resonates with me as a storyteller. I’m also a big fan of Jay Shetty’s podcast, where the vulnerability and authenticity in his conversations inspire me to be more open in my own journey.

In terms of books, True Love—which explores Buddhist teachings on love and connection—has helped me heal and deepen relationships after a difficult heartbreak. Right now, I’m reading The Artist’s Way to further explore my identity and creative path as an artist. These resources keep me evolving personally and creatively every day.
