Conversations with Riley Higby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Riley Higby.

Hi Riley, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m Riley, a photographer based in Utah and Dallas, TX. I specialize in capturing authentic love stories through timeless, artistic photography. I have always been a creative, since I was a child I was drawn to all art forms. I felt I saw life through a different and more vibrant lens. It granted me the gift of presence, and the ability to see the beauty in even the smallest of moments. It is what led me to my passion for photography, I wanted the opportunity to preserve that beauty and share my artistic vision with others, along with help bring their vision to life. My husband Ty is a brilliant wedding videographer who helped support me in the pursuit of my career in photography. I began as a second shooter for some weddings he was working until I honed in on my craft as a photographer and formed a business of my own. Not only is it amazing being a solo photographer, but it’s been even more fun being able to work by the man I love’s side as a photo/video duo from time to time. It’s been such a gift being able to capture such beautiful moments for others whether that be weddings, engagements, couples shoots, or solo portraits.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I feel obstacles are to arise with any business start up, but I feel the biggest thing to overcome is yourself. To be able to find ways to thrive in the uncertainty and find success in it, to believe in yourself and your capabilities. Even more so, the ability to stay focused and disciplined in the face of all other things life may throw your way. For me, I’m a mom of three, all of which are under the age of four. the key for me has been finding a balance in all things and remembering why I started this to begin with. As a mom, I know how fleeting these moments are, and that is my greatest objective, to help others preserve these special moments, it’s what keeps me going.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a photographer who is who is primarily focused on connection, emotion, and storytelling. I feel I have a pretty versatile shooting skills with the ability to capture traditional, documentary, editorial, & dark and moody photography based on my clients preferences. My editing style is natural, timeless, & warm-toned. I feel I do an incredible job at doing true to color edits. I specialize in weddings, elopements, engagements, portraits, & couples sessions.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I feel that people are craving connection in a very disconnected world. They are wanting to be immersed in the moment of the imagery whether that be more of a documentary/cinematic form of photography that has a story to share, or more of a vintage/film based style of photography. I feel my current style of photography is going to continue to expand and grow for many years to come.
