Life & Work with William Kranstover of Peoa Utah

Today we’d like to introduce you to William Kranstover.

Hi William, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi, my story begins back in Wisconsin where I graduated with an art and English degree. I taught for a number of years in Australia.. I came to Park city in the early 70s, where I continue to do my art .I I raised a family but continuied to do my art.. I have a gallery/studio in PO Utah where I paint and show my work. It’s an old grocery store built-in 1892. So I have a lot of room to throw around paint I sculpt as well. I do found objects from the junkyards metal yards snd any place that I think might provide good found material. I love to recycle objects.
Painting, however, is my main focus in this particular time of my life. I’m part of the Gallery Association in Park city and have a numerous collectors. . I work with lots designers as well.
I’m considered a postmodern expressionist. Most of my themes are landscapes from around the area and are locally inspired

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been blessed by a fairly smooth road. But my desire and passion have kept me on that road through all my life. They’ve always been struggles, but I believe if you have the love and passion in in your heart, the road somehow seems to smooth itself out. I was always terrified by the phrase, “starving artist “so I always kept a daytime job on the side until I figured out I could make it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Again, my work consists primarily of painting and sculpture. I was trained in all the disciplines throughout my life and combine them whether it’s collage and paint or sculpture of metal and wood. I believe my colors and compositions in my painting sets me apart from many other artists. I most proud of my daughters who have become wonderful artists in their own right. I always had material even when they were young for them to paint on. And waterbase colors obviously so they won’t wreck anything. They had a ball doing it.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I take risks all the time when I come to my studio. Especially when I have something in mind but not sure what it’s going to be. I start out with my four c’s concept, composition, color, and commitment. Sometimes the last one is the most difficult nonetheless laying it down on Canvas or paper. It usually looks nothing like I had in mind. Those are the risk you take always looking for happy accidents.

Pricing:

  • I priced by size anywhere from $300-$350 a sf.square foot square foot
