Inspiring Conversations with Sylvan Needham of S.E. Needham Jewelers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvan Needham.

Hi Sylvan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For more than a century, S.E. Needham Jewelers has been at the heart of love stories throughout Northern Utah. Since 1896, families have trusted us to help mark life’s most meaningful moments—proposals, anniversaries, milestones, and memories. Shopping at S.E. Needham has become a tradition passed down through generations, just like the business itself.

Our story began with Lulu Holt Needham, a remarkable woman who opened our doors in downtown Logan at a time when female business owners were rare. Her husband, Sylvan Eugene Needham, joined her shortly after. Together, they led the business through World War I and the Great Depression, and raised three children—only one of whom, Sylvan Eugene Needham Jr., survived into adulthood.

Sylvan Jr. eventually partnered with his father and took over leadership in 1935. He guided us through World War II and into the booming decades of the 1950s and ’60s. When he passed away in 1967 at just 55, his son, Sylvan Eugene Needham III, stepped in. Sylvan III dedicated his career to expanding the store’s offerings and helping preserve Logan’s historic downtown. In the early 1980s, he operated as many as eight retail stores simultaneously. He and his wife, Christie Smith of Newton, raised 11 children, including the future fourth-generation jeweler, Sylvan Eugene Needham IV.

Gene IV started as a goldsmith in 1984, working evenings after school and helping on the sales floor before leaving on a church mission to the West Indies. In 1990, he took over management of the store and earned certifications in diamonds and diamond grading from the Gemological Institute of America. He continues to serve customers daily with expertise in buying, appraising, and grading jewelry. Alongside him is his wife, Julie Coppin Needham, whose strength and partnership have been central to the store’s continued growth. His younger brother, Joseph Needham, began as a goldsmith at just 13 and later trained at the prestigious Revere Academy of Jewelry Art in San Francisco. Today, Joseph is our head goldsmith.

Together, Gene, Julie, and Joseph ushered in a new era of growth. In 1995, the store underwent a major renovation, and in 1996, we were named Cache Valley’s “Retailer of the Year.” That same year also marked the arrival of the fifth generation—Sylvan Eugene Needham V.

Today, Sylvan V works alongside his wife Jocelyn, carrying forward the legacy with new energy and vision. He’s helped expand the store’s focus on custom jewelry, 3D design, and innovation, while maintaining our deeply personal customer experience. His sister, Elizabeth Needham, has played a vital role in bringing the store into the digital age by leading the development of a fully functioning website and online presence. Across generations, business-minded women like Lulu, Julie, Jocelyn, and Elizabeth have been essential to our success—each contributing in meaningful ways to help the store grow, evolve, and thrive.

Sylvan V’s leadership continues to build bridges between tradition and the future, honoring our roots while modernizing with purpose. As a fifth-generation jeweler, he represents more than a family line—he represents the living heart of a legacy that has served the community for over 125 years.

We also honor the legacy of those who helped build us. Among them is our distinguished watchmaker, Mel Smith, who served our customers with skill and care for an extraordinary 72 years. Others like Weldon Koefed (1946–1984) and Mercy Allen (1940–1991) gave decades of their lives to help make S.E. Needham Jewelers what it is today.

Through world wars, economic challenges, and generations of change, one thing has never wavered—our mission “to provide the ultimate buying experience for each and every customer by exceeding expectations in service, quality, and integrity.” That’s who we’ve always been. And it’s who we’re proud to continue being.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but the hardships we’ve faced have shaped our resilience and deepened our commitment to the people we serve.

Our story began in an unusual way. Lulu Holt married into the Johnson family, who originally owned the store. When her husband left for Europe and never returned—sending only a letter to say he wouldn’t be coming back—Lulu was left to manage the business on her own. For six years, she kept it running, showing rare strength, determination, and business sense at a time when women rarely held such roles. Her courage became the foundation we’ve built on ever since.

Eventually, she married Sylvan Eugene Needham, and together they led the store through World War I, the Great Depression, and into the era of World War II. Their son, Sylvan Jr., took over in 1935 and guided the business through postwar America. But in 1967, at just 55 years old, Sylvan Jr. passed away suddenly. His son, Sylvan III, was thrust into leadership earlier than expected. Still young and with a family of his own to raise, he stepped up and carried the store forward. He expanded our reach and became a champion for preserving downtown Logan, all while managing up to eight retail stores.

When Gene IV and his brother Joseph became the fourth generation to lead the business, they inherited a changing industry. They modernized our systems, updated the store, and earned certifications to meet the expectations of a new kind of customer. But they also had to weather significant challenges—economic downturns, rising competition, and shifts in diamond markets.

The fifth generation has stepped into a world that’s constantly changing. Along with the COVID-19 pandemic and the volatile rise and fall of lab-grown diamonds, we’ve faced broader financial crises and increasing pressure from online competitors .But like Lulu, we continue to adapt with resilience and heart.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We’re a fifth-generation, family-owned jeweler that’s been serving Northern Utah since 1896. For more than a century, S.E. Needham Jewelers has helped people celebrate life’s most meaningful moments—engagements, anniversaries, birthdays, and milestones that deserve something lasting.

We’re best known for our engagement rings, and we proudly source our diamonds directly from Antwerp, Belgium—the diamond capital of the world. That connection allows us to offer exceptional quality and value, with hand-selected stones that meet our high standards.

Our services include custom jewelry design using 3D CAD technology, in-house repairs by expert goldsmiths, and full-service appraisals. With multiple laser welders and a skilled team, we offer quick turnaround and careful craftsmanship on everything from ring resizing to complete restorations. We also carry a wide selection of fine jewelry, watches, and one-of-a-kind vintage pieces.

What sets us apart is the experience. We’re not a high-pressure store. We take time to understand each customer and create a welcoming, personal atmosphere that generations of families have come to trust.

We’re proud of our history, but we believe a true legacy is something you keep building. One way we do that is through the Victoria Jane Legacy Collection—a curated line of antique and vintage-inspired pieces named after the first member of our family’s sixth generation. It blends the romance of the past with the craftsmanship and meaning our customers are looking for today. We’re also passionate about helping people create jewelry that’s entirely their own. Through our Logan Rocks Jewelry Workshop, guests can get hands-on and design their own pieces with guidance from our expert team. Whether it’s reimagining a family heirloom or dreaming up something completely new, we love turning meaningful ideas into lasting treasures.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The jewelry industry is shifting quickly, and we expect the next five to ten years to bring continued change. One of the biggest differences we see today is that customers have more options than ever before. Between online retailers, lab-grown diamonds, custom design services, and vintage resellers, people are approaching jewelry purchases from all directions. That means we have to be more thoughtful and more intentional in how we serve.

We believe custom design will keep growing. People want something personal and meaningful, and they want to be part of the creative process. Technology like 3D CAD design and 3D printing will continue to make that possible. At the same time, there’s a renewed interest in vintage and heirloom jewelry. More customers are looking for one-of-a-kind pieces with history and character, and that’s something we’ve been doing for generations.

Lab-grown diamonds have also reshaped parts of the industry. While pricing and perception are still evolving, it’s clear that both lab-grown and natural diamonds will have a place in the future. We see our role as helping customers navigate those choices with honesty, education, and care.

Despite all the changes, one thing hasn’t gone away—the value of a trusted relationship. As the world becomes more digital, we believe the in-person experience will matter even more. Sitting down with someone to design an engagement ring or restore a family heirloom is a level of connection that cannot be replaced by a website.
