Today we’d like to introduce you to Slava Dorogopulko.
Hi Slava, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my business 16 years ago because I wanted to provide a better future for my family. After being in the trades for 12 years I was getting a lot of side work that I was doing on the weekends and was not spending as much time as I wanted to with my new born sone. The side jobs kept coming and got larger over time. One day I decided that I was going to try doing side work as full time work. At first the company struggled but as time went on I managed to work some kinks out. The company has grown over time in reputation. We have been a company of multiple crews at one time, and a single employee at others. Now a days we specialize in carpentry with a small crew, but we also do general contracting with a lot of subcontractors. Over the years we have focused on high quality work and have built up the name to a standard where homeowners and other contractors expect high quality production.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. Some of the struggles we have faced have been. When we had a very large work force, keeping all the guys working especially in the slower months, reassuring customers that they were going to get the same quality of work when a different crew showed up on the job. Juggling multiple jobs at one time. And now really the main challenge we face is finding good, knowledgeable, experienced and responsive employees that actually want to work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a general contracting company specializing in all aspects of carpentry. We do contracting work for home owners and provide carpentry services for other general contractors. We mainly focus on high end finish carpentry but we do other carpentry work in order to keep the ball rolling. We focus on being very knowledgeable on all aspects of building, new technics, new technologies and current styles of design. One of our main goals and objectives is the focus on details, from small to large.
Our work has been used in the AZECK exterior trim product catalog. One of our current jobs will be photographed to be used for a local lumberyard advertisement.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
The ability to be able to have a business that is self pre-paled, in a way that we don’t need to purchase leads or invest in advertising. The work comes in do to the name and brand that we have built.
