Meet Jennifer Ha of JLJ Law Group, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Ha.

Hi Jennifer, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Jennifer Ha immigrated to the United States at the age of 1. Her parents escaped Vietnam after the fall of Saigon. They were part of the wave of the boat people who arrived in the United States as refugees with nothing to their name. After staying many months in a refugee camp, Ms. Ha’s family was sponsored through the Mormon church to the state of Utah. As a child, Ms. Ha, grew up in proverty like many other immigrants and learned at a very young age that an education could help her family escape their situation. At a very young age, Ms. Ha needed to serve as the interpreter for her parents, and also the caregiver for her young brother. They were latchkey children who had to fend for themselves as their parents worked low, paying jobs in order to survive. Since she came from a mammogram background, she always had a passion for the immigrant community and knew that one day she wanted to serve those who had the same struggles. She worked hard to pay for her own way through school and eventually became an attorney. She eventually opened up her own Law practice and has been serving the immigrant community here in the United States and across the globe.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
in the beginning of her practice, there were not a lot of Vietnamese attorneys. Although her goal was to serve the Vietnamese community and other minority communities, she faced a lot of doubt within her own community. Unfortunately, there is still the belief that only a Caucasian attorney can be heard in a court of law and that somehow to be represented by minority attorney, you would be discriminated against by the judge, jury or any type of government official. It took a long time for Miss Ha to build her brand and to convince Sum in her own ethnic community to believe that minority attorneys educated here had just as much capacity to serve them as a Caucasian attorney.

We’ve been impressed with JLJ Law Group, PLLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
